I am not sure but maybe you have emmisions checks yearly? that will have a big factor in what you do to your truck I am doing my own conversion as we speak and I have gotten no help from others as well what I am planning to do is take a motor from a full size chevy taking the fan off putting two 12 volt pulling fans in its place and a turbo 350 trans behind and working it out from there if you find out any thing from other places let me know justin

as far as \"working it out from there\" goes, i\'m sure this is where the most help is needed. mine\'s an 88 SB with an 80-85 carb\'d 305. the engine & trans will drop in & fit easily. details that i\'ve had problems with are these: radiator of course, this one is common. i\'ve got one from a 90s FWD v6 grand am. mounted where the ac condenser goes, i could run any huge engine-driven fan, lots of room with a 1\" setback on the engine. adapting the hoses was a serious pain though. i\'m still looking at getting a Modine corvette radiator, #1R2051, about $160 local. the HEI distributor on \'74 and up GM fits fine even though it looks huge. wiring it is real easy, 1 wire (the pink one). 168 tooth flywheel with HD starter wouldn\'t fit due to frame. used 153 tooth and starter from a 1982 4.4L (267) monte carlo. fits fine. still under construction, questions/comments very welcome. -midwestslamn-s10 http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

First off, I don\'t think the T5 came behind the 4.3. I thought they only came behind the 2.8 and smaller motors. You will have to do half a dozen mods to get that tranny to work for teh v8. Some of which require machining. Its not rated for a v8. Don\'t waste your time or money on that tranny.
Second, on the 305 issue, yeah, boat anchor. Most of the 305\'s, especially if your getting a older one, such as one from a truck, didn\'t ahve much more hp than a newer 4.3. Some had less. My 81 full size chevy truck had a 305, and had under 150 hp. I belive even the TPI 305\'s from the camaros\' only had like 200 hp or so. A stock 4.3 has at least 180 hp depending on which model. And that 305 weighs a lot more. If your putting a v8 in, go with at least a 350. Unless someone you know built a 305 for some reason. Or you\'ve got a old 327 laying around. I wouldn\'t mind a high revvin 327 and a 5 speed. To say if I didn\'t already have a mild 350 and a 6 speed.

Hey dude if a 305 is what you want go for It. I know a few who prefer it for gas mileage, a buddy of mine has a stock 265 in his SS Monte, I had a mild 350 in my monte we raced and he stomped a mudhole in my ass every time off the line and in top speed.

Thats a SS, not your typical 305. And, I was pulling 23-26 mph on the eway with my 5 speed and 3.42 gears. Its more with my 6 speed. Thats a mild 350 with a 650 double.

to keep the t-5 tranny you need to change the bellhousing on it to a 90 degree (vhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif or else the tranny will not bolt up to the v8 bold for bolt. i\'am also keeping my 5 speed for my v8

It a little more involved than that to use the 60 degree T5 tranny.

I keep hearing about \"changing the bell housing\"... arent the bellhousing and transmission case all one peice?
ZZ4Blazer
07-24-2002, 01:08 AM
No. Most manual transmissions have a bolt on bellhousing. I know that the 90+ trucks with the 4.3 and a 5 speed have the New Venture 3500 5 speed transmission, and its all one peice like an automatic transmission. All the automatic transmissions I\"ve seen have been all one peice.

If it is a first gen s-10 the drive train from a 78-87 camaro is the same as the s-10\'s tranny driveshaft and rearend

Yeah, but it is still the most asked question!
It would be interesting to know if that truck got completed and to see a picture of it.

you\'re going to need some kind of fan, lot\'s of hoses, lots of gaskets, air cleaner, shifter, gauges (temperature, oil pressure, volts, etc..)
also I recommend buying a set of bolts for your intake manifold, mounting hardware, headers, etc..
you can pick up a set at jeg\'s or summit.
there\'s nothing worse than having to deal with old rusty bolts, plus the swap will look nicer...
