View Full Version : Need rear help
Well after trying to put my auburn posi unit in, and realizing it was the wrong axle sline count, I decided to just put my 4:10 ring and pinion in anyway. So its beend done for a while and the other night i drove it up and down the driveway and it wasn\'t loud and didn\'t get really hot and it seemed great. Tonight I took it for a ride up the road, and things weren\'t so great..in fact things sucked. At first everything was great then all of the sudden at like 30 mph it started like groaning or whining real bad..under acceleration it won\'t do it at all but if you just coast it does it really bad. There seems to be enough backlash, and the marking compound patter matched what Richmond said it should look like so wtf could be wrong anyone have any ideas??

Kyle id call richmond gear and talk to them so you by chance dont void the warranty with driving it
\"seems to be enough backlash\"
did you measure it...if not im betting its to much. this is usually the cause of gear noise on deceleration.

Decel noise is usually caused by too much backlash or not enough pinion pre-load. You might have both. You can not set them \"by feel\".
could the pinion nut be too loose maybe?

Well yeah, that\'s what Mzoomora said: \"not enough pinion pre-load\" I\'ve got minimal experience with such things. Others here have plenty of experience, Mzoomora for instance. Too bad he doesn\'t live down the road from you... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
lol that would be nice. The reason i did it myself was..i like being able to say i built everyting totally by myself. I was going to have a local guy that owns a garage set the rear up because he is supposedly good at it and hes a fellow hot rodder. I don\'t really know him but the guy i work with is old buddies with him so we stopped in one day and i asked him and i figured he\'d be all gung ho about doing it and hes like \'\'ehhh well i\'ll think about it\'\' so that really pissed me off (i\'m very stubborn) and that made me want to do it myself even more...so here I am. It was not a smart move thats for sure.
