I know that no one on this site likes ricers, but with the price of gas being what it is, I had to do what I had to do. I bought a 1995 Mazda MX-6. I got a good deal on it, and at the beginning of the year it will be my daughters first car. The reason I am posting this, is I know there are alot of very experienced mechanics on this site. Here is the problem. I have a check engine light on and do not know how to trouble shoot to find the problem. When I start the car. it goes to fast idle and then drops down like it is suppose to, but after driving it a couple of miles, it wont idle. I had a gm that did this and it ended up being a tps. I cant afford to start replacing sensors on this one. Cab anyone tell me if I can pull trouble codes without high dollar tools. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Autozone\'s around here will scan for free, if not it may be cheaper to take it to a dealer and let them diagnose then replace the part yourself versus just throwing parts at it. I work at a chevy/cadillac dealership and we do this quite often for 70 dollars. I dont know squat about a mazda so i cant even begin to guess.

thanks

Pulling codes only gives you a direction to go in. Sometimes replacing parts that a code comes up for is just throwing parts at it.

What are the exact systems? FOr what you have already stated, I would start with a throttle body cleaning. More than likly carbon buildup is sticking the idle control solind.

Auto zone does do the free code checks but it sounds like theres more of an issue. A 95 is OBD 1 and the codes are general.

More info, year make model trans ac. I will try to get a flow chart for the syptoms.

space.

For future buying refeance my daily driven 2wd 91 S10 2.5L 5 spd gets 28 mpg. However I don\'t know what a MX-6 is. I\'m sure it would blow my doors off. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif Sorry I don\'t have an answer to your problem.

Id look at the IAC for build up or the 02 sensor. Sounds like its having problems when it goes into closed loop.

check egr valve , make sure all vacume lines going to it are not cracked or broken.the iac motors on the mazdas are huge and expensive . don\'t clean it with anything harsh like carb cleaner use something more like wd40. pull a plug out and see what it looks like lean or rich. sometimes the valve cover gaskets leak into sparkplug holes.

i dont know what your problem is but i have a 87 camaro 350 Tpi, that did that so i started replacing the parts that were flashing on the trouble code and 500$ later it was still messed up so i took it to a dealer and they fixed it for about 150$

It almost sounds like a vacuum leak, so WD40 the hoses with motor running to check for leaks.

I agree with markymark , the EGR goes bad on most fyords. They have a lot of particles in their exhaust. Just take off the EGR and clean it along with cleanign the rest of the TB and IAC.

my truck does a fast idle occassionally too. after driving for a while, it occaissonaly runs at 3000rpm for a little while. last time it happend was yesterday, after going too slow in too high a gear which killed oil pressure. is this something the truck will automaticly do to bring up lubrication again?

I finally got to work on the car again today. I has a ford eec computer system, so once I figured that out, it was easy to get the codes.

It turned out to be a MAF> Autozone wanted 100 dollars for it. This is going to be a low dollar project, so I went to the wrecking yard.

45 dollars and a 30 day guarantee, and problem is fixed.

Thanks

The motor monitors vacuum or air speed, depending on the type of system you have. If either falls a lot as it does at low RPMS caused by poor fuel or the throttle closing too much, or whatever then the motor tries to compensate by opening IAC. If the RPMs are too high, like a vacuum leak, in a strange place, then some systems do not have a trouble code for that. If you have a real new FI system, those do monitor vacuum leaks, like fuel cap lose, but that is it.
