Ok I ordered an auburn posi unit and I ended up needing a 26 spline and the unit is a 28 spline. The ring and pinion that i ordered are for a 3 series 28 spline carrier. I don\'t know what series the 26 spline open carrier i have is. So anyway...I took the auburn unit apart thinking i could change the spider gears and make it 26 spline but not only would that not work...but i\'ve been trying to get the springs and everything back in for like 3 weeks and i can\'t do it and now i lost a spring. So the posi unit is pretty much screwed. Anyway..the gears are in the truck on the 26 spline open carrier. I don\'t know what the hell to do...I don\'t think the gears are right for this carrier and its starting to whine a little bit. I thought about getting an entire rear end..housing and all but i really like the 4.10\'s and want to keep them. Is it possible to get a 3 series posi carrier for 26 spline axles? I already spent alot of money on this and don\'t want to spend much more even though its all due to my own stupidity. Mzoomora you\'re a rear end guy aren\'t you? what do you reccomend I do?

first calm down, It will be alright.

let me get this straight

You have 26 spline axles right?

You bought a 28 spline posi?

And you got a set of 4.10 gears right?

the gears you have will fit on either 26 or 28 spline carriers. The axle spline doesn\'t change anything as far as the gears. The gears are probably for a 3 series carrier.

What I would do is try to put the unit back together with some help from some buddies.

Put the gears on the unit. And go to a junkyard and just switch axle shafts to 28 spline ones.

Or see if you can return the posi and switch it for a 26 spline carrier. then do that

What gears were in your truck? If it was 3.08 or numerically lower then you have a 2 series carrier in the truck and it wont work unless you switch carriers or I believe they make a spacer that you can use. If the gears were 3.23 or higher numerically then the carrier in the truck is a 3 series

I hope that I didn\'t lose you. Hope this helps

And please if I am wrong somebody please set me straight.

I\'ve been trying to get hte posi back together for 3 weeks i\'ve had 5 different guys help me and i lost one of the springs anyway...so that idea is out the window..i can\'t do anythign with that thing. I don\'t know what series the open 26 spline carrier is but the 3 series 4.10 ring and pinion are on it right now and its in the truck..and its starting to whine. Maybe i should just find an entire rear end housing and everything thats a 28 spline 3 series and have my 4.10s put on it...posi or not i don\'t really care at this point. or maybe the gears are alright on this carrier and something else is wrong inside...are there 3 series posi 26 spline carriers in existence? if so i could just get one of them and have a rear end guy redo the whole rear for me and everything. I don\'t know..I\'m at a loss

yeah there are 3 series 26 spline carriers. What gears came on the open 26 spline carrier?

buy a mini spool for the open carrier. there only like 99.00 bucks. but if your going to drive it on the street the spool wont work for you, you;ll end up snapping a axle.......

i also have a 3 series (factory) gov lock posi i would trade you for that auburn unit or take a 100 bucks for it....it is a 28 spline though, just get new axles from the junk yard...

do you know how a gov lock works right? it doesnt work like a clutch type. on a gov lock one tire has to turn before the other kicks in. do a little research if you want and get back to me. i will give you first option.

what are the chances of finding that spring? doesnt really matter though, i would still take it in trade.... send me a p.m either way so im not holding it for nothing......oh yeah i believe its made by zexel

If its a stand up place you bought it from talk to them about sending it back to auburn asking if it could possibly be refurbished to fit your application

Do not get a mini-spool, and do not get a gov-lok, both are junk fro street/strip or hard street use.

You can buy the springs for the Auburn from the same place you got the unit, in a kit. Also you are probably getting a whine due to improper preload or set up. Is it coast or drive side? You have t install the 2 plates with the 5 springs together. If you cant do it, just find a local diff shop to do it for you.

As far as the the axle spline the best option would be just get 28 spline axles, either new or from a yard. They are stronger and as long as you have a 28 spline diff you will be fine.

Your other option is to repair and return your 28 spline and reorder the 26, but now you have return and new shipping freight, plus possibly a restock fee.

The gears are the same from a 7.5-26 spline to a 7.6-28 spline, so they will work as will all the bearings.

I cant remember how much the sorngs are, but between 60-100 I would guess. Axles can be had new for about $120 each new, probably about $40-50 each used. Just check the splines for twisting and the bearing surface for pitting and wear.

Auburn Assembly Instructions (http://auburngear.com/aftermarket/common/literature/Differential_DisAssy_Assy_Instructions.pdf)

Auburn Brochure (http://auburngear.com/aftermarket/common/literature/Diff_Brochure_2000.pdf)

Check the second link, page 7. It has the part numbers for the spring kits, either a 541016 or 541017 deoending on what unit you have. The 017 has the higher rate.

like i said, a spool has no place on the street, but there not junk. for the track they serve the purpose well.

Well I called up auburn looking for a spring and retainer kit and they told me about this return system that they have. You send them your old unit as long as its within 4 years old and they\'ll send you the same brand spankin new unit for 110$. How awesome is that??

What are you going to do for the spline? Have them change the gears or get the newer axles?
