OK just looking for tips...

How important is it that the engine is hot? I still have the plugs out from the compression test and would hate to waste all that time.

Alao, what\'s the best way to tell if the piston is at TDC for each cylinder?

Any other tips would be great.

must be hot because heat expands. pretty much just srick a screw driver in each cylinder and then check

It could take a while to find TDC for each cylinder with the heads on. Are you needing to find TDC while you have the leakdown gauge in the spark plug hole? When my balancer mark wasn\'t correct, I used a $7 piston stop from summit to check TDC on my cylinders, but it wouldnt work if you have something use the plug hole already.

no, I just have to find TDC, then I can insert the fitting for the hose/gauge.

I\'ve heard of the screwdriver in the hole trick, but thought maybe a better way would be to watch the position of the valves. I could pop off the valve covers if it would help.

Oh yeah, I also hear that the engine can turn when you apply air pressure. What\'s the best way to lock the crank?

Or if you have a dampner that has timing marks for valve lash... most don\'t however.. best way with out pulling valve cover ect... use bump starter put your finger over the hole wait for intake, then as soon as you feel exhaust test it and apply pressure... Some times you have to take 2 tires....

Hey Neil, thanks for the reply. How\'d the move go?

Still haven\'t gotten the inspection taken care of, but I\'ve been in touch with the guys there. They said whenever I get it running good bring it down.

Just gotta figure out what\'s causing my oil burning.

Once you set number 1 on top dead center every 90 degree rotation of the crank will put the next cyclinder in the firing order on top dead center. That is how I set lash. Mark balancer every 90 degrees from 0 with whiteout or something similar. Do number 1 then rotate 90 degree till next mark lines up and do next in firing order, continue till done.
