View Full Version : Got Quoted on a Paint Job

I went to 2 different places today and got quotes to fix my rust spots and completely paint my entire truck.

One shop was $2,200.00 and the other was $2,000.00

These prices are both in CDN Dollars.

My truck isn\'t that bad for rust, which they both agreed with. it was basically the cost of paint plus sanding the truck down and fixing the few area\'s of surface rust.

One place recommended using base clear and the other place recommended using a polyurathane type paint

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is this a high price? I\'m thinking it is. The one guy said the paint alone was $1,600.00 for a dupont base clear? I can get enough of that paint from a source i know for $700.00 so I\'m a bit sketchy on these places.

Also do you guys have any recommendations on one paint vs. the other?

I wish i knew somebody in the business well enough that they could be straight with me and i could trust what they tell me.

i have a guy here in prineville that said he would paint my truck for $700 but that was only a single stage paint jpb which would do me just fine.

I work at a shop in MN and to have a shop paint your truck for under $3000 is a good deal. Base clear is the best piant to use and dupont is a good paint compony. You can also get a nice paint job for less if you find some one to do it on the side out of there garage.

urethane is just a type of enamel..its still base clear. your normal everyday enamel like dupont centari or nason fullthane is acrylic enamel. nason fullthane would be the best to use on your truck...fairly cheap and great product for the money. Urethane enamel is pretty big money

Hmm.

Ok, well these replies make me feel a little better. I thought they were trying to hose me, but i guess not.

So i guess it\'s not too unreasonable at all then.

Guess i\'ll have to start saving my pennies. In the meantime i\'ll sand down the rust spots i\'ve got and just primer them for the time being until i get enough cash scraped together!

Being married and owning a house can both suck and be a benefit! It sucks for the fact i can\'t blow all my money on my truck! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

$2000- $2200 IS NOT UNREASONABLE FOR 2-STAGE PAINT.

Amen to that. But you\'ve got to know the guy\'s work. I had my truck repainted in \'97 by a friend of a friend, he\'d done work for me before. (a little 2 man shop) Basically, he asked me how much I wanted to spend, and that\'s the quality of the job I\'d get. He could paint a shit job for $500, or He could give me something near show quality for a couple or $3K. I think I spent like $1,200, but that included all new belt moulding rubber, and a new GMC decal on the tailgate. That decal was a pricey SOB, if I recall.

BTW, NOW I wished I had spent an addn. $1K on the paint job, oh well! Also, the paint guy is the guy who gave me my Skylark buckets. He was a Gran Sport nut, always had a couple Gran Sports or Skylarks around. Great guy, but he moved out to the boonies of PA.

I think that $2200 is a descent price for a paint job with body work. Shop rate in my my little bitty town here in Kansas is $42/hr. I am sure it is more in the bigger towns. It doesn\'t take to many hours to rack up a good size bill. You also have the price of parts if they are replacing rockers cab corners and such. BTW I just bought a gallon of PPG epoxy primer from my buddy that owns a body shop and paid $220 his cost.

ReedZ is talking Canadian Currency.

I think I\'m right on the following:

$1.00 Canadian = approx $.82 in US.

$2200 Can. = $1804 US

Yeah, the price is CDN. My truck is a reg. cab long box. The guy that quoted me $2,200.00 does really nice work. i\'ve seen several vehicles come out of his shop and they look real good! That\'s using a base clear 2 stage type paint too. Not sure if his is Dupont though.

There won\'t be much body work, as the rockers and cab corners are solid. I replaced both cab corners 2 yrs ago. I\'ve got a bad dent on my tailgate from droping a 350 block on it, but they said they can fix that.

I\'m going to start putting my monthly bonus checks away and will probably get it done once i have enough. I think i\'ll wait until next spring to do it. But fix the spots now myself so they don\'t get worse. I\'ve got a couple other things i have to buy first anyways. Tires and a new carb and maybe intake

With the price of materials these days 2200 sounds pretty fair for a decent base/clear job.Things to consider -how long do you plan to keep the truck-can you do the body work and save$-most important what does the wife sayand can you afford the paint job ANDwhatever she wants in exchange for you getting it http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif .A $2200 paint job may not increase the value that much should you decide to sell it

U know people may say that that is alot of money. But really if he said even 5000 ANd with a warrenty . I wouldn\'t turn it down. I done body work and i hate it very much. ALso its very time comsuming to do body work. Also messy and stuff. TRy it u will think next time that really its not that much to get it done by someone else. But also look at work they have done previously forsure! i paid 3500 for my truck and that was 4 or 5 years ago now. It still shiny and all.

if you look at my yellow truck in the gallary, that was a $75 paint job. that includes materials, labor, everthing! of couse i\'m good friends with the owner of this body shop that painted my truck, and i did all the body work myself at his shop. also to cover the remaining cost of the materials, i had done bodywork on a couple of other vehicles for him. it\'s good to have a good friend in that type of business. in my opinion, those are good prices for a good paintjob.

It may too late now, as I read this thread. But House of Kolor paint will knock your eyes out and its about the same price of other paint if you buy it at the right place. I bought enought to paint a excab 95 chevy for about $600. I plan to paint it myself.

My truck w/ no rust will cost $1700 USD for a guy that paints out of his personal shop. The paint he uses is from House Of Kolors. That would include sanding and primer.

Go with the base coat clear coat. It is easier to fix if you get a dent or something. A good friend of mine done my truck for a 1000.00. 2 grand aint that bad really. Also see if they will give you some kind of a warranty--cracking etc.
