View Full Version : all wheel drive conversion
my first time here. i\'m doing a frame up on an 87 s-10 that already had a 350-350. the frame is sandblasted and ready for paint. my question is has anybody heard or done any all wheel drive conversions to mimic the syclone or typhoon?

most the awd ones i have seen started life as a normal 4wd this make it almost simple convertion to mount a differential in the front of a 2wd frame would be major work but you never know maybe some one has done it but it would be easyier with a 4wd frame

Dont bother if you have a 2wd frame. It\'d be easier to build your own tube frame than make the 2wd an AWD.

I\'m not 100% on this, but I thought I was told that the front AWD units on the syclone & typhoon were from the AWD Chevy Astro vans... few years ago my father brought a syclone home from the GM Tech center, I think it was one of his engineer friends at GM told us that the vans were the donor. Like I said not 100% , Like the previous post said it might just be 4WD front. Just telling ya what I heard... JP
thanks guy\'s. i\'ve been thru most of the v-8 webring and all of the Sy-Ty sites and did\'nt find anything on this. i did find a guy in chicago with an olds bravada with the turbo v-6 from a syclone but since this was already an all wheel drive i kept looking. i just liked the concept of something a little bit different

I have read somewhere where somebody took took a Bravada Rollin chasis and converted it to a awd s-10, but it didn\'t stay if it was a v-8 or not.

Nope, a bravada is already AWD. Its all the same as a Sy/Ty. Front axle and t-case are the same. At least for 1st gen\'s. Not sure about second.
BTW, there a guy on the sporttruck.com forum who had done the 4x4 to a AWD V8 conversion. His name is S10Wildside. Try hitting him up.

The difference between the AWD and the 4WD is the rh axle tube. The 4x4 has a cable to engage the axle shaft. The AWD is done from vac. The tranfer case is also different 4X4 to AWD. Get a 4X4 frame and the drive drain (t-case,front driveshaft, and front differintail) and you should be good to go. The wheel will also have to be from a 4X4 or the off set will be wrong.
There was an article a few years back in Hot Rod or Car Craft about a guy that had a 4 door AWD-small block S-10 Blazer. Had a stroked and poked motor and went like mad.
Lowered and cornered as well as it went in a straight line.
This is something I\'ve thought about as well.
I think i know where i can get all the parts. Some people know where I work...in a salvage yard.
Good luck,
Jeff.....

if it\'s a 4x4 you could get a transfer case from a awd astro minivan, and the electronic computer to controll it.. it would require sensors and stuff too to detect wheelspin... it would be a lot of work but also a lot of fun....

AWD is all wheel drive. It doesn\'t diss-engauge. The Sy/Ty\'s and bravadas have full time awd.
again, thanks for all the input. i\'m finding out they re-vamped the all wheel drive in the bravada in 96 or for the new body style in 97 and called it smart trac. the front wheels grabbed only when the back slipped. anyway, i\'ll keep on the subject and see what i can find out. thanks again guy\'s!

the frame on 2wds are totally different, 4x4 and AWD run torsion bar front suspension, unless you cant get the crossmembers for that, and pretty much drill your own holes in the front to mount the front member you could do it i would say, i have a 2wd blazer and i was considering putting a solid front axle on it and that would run between 3 and 8000 dollars...i was like...shit i might as well just get a 4x4 s10..another difference between 4x4 and AWD is the fron drive shaft uses Constant Velocity(CV) boots in stead of your regular U-joint...just get the front drive shaft of a typhoon and the t-case and you should be in buisness..tip \"if u do that with a 4x4 you can lower and lift the front with the turn of a wrench on the torsion bar screws...for u
z-71ers thats the cheapest way to get 2 inches out of the stock front end to level it out...s10s too\"
