.480 lift? around there... don\'t forget to get new lifters and springs... might as well get a K kit from CompCams, timing chain, cam, lifters, springs, retainers etc.. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

you can get away with 480 with stock heads.. your valves are a descent size, im guessing your heads must flow descent ##\'s for stock castings. You wont NEED a higher stall, but a 2200 wouldnt hurt.

A decent cam for a stock 305 is the comp cams 268 high energy. I think it has a .454 lift, and a .050 duration of 218 or 224 degrees. That should be more than enough to wake the motor up.

Call Comp Cams help line. They\'ll give you the part # that will be perfect for your engine.

I would run something in the 420-440 lift range with 272-282 duration. The 305 does not have alot of compression and you can kill the engine with the wrong cam in a hurry.

Bigger is not always better!

i used a crane energiser with .447 lift and 290 duration... with the same heads actually and a edelbrock intake and shorty headers... i beat many a mustangs with that motor and had all kinds of low end torque left, we did a desktop dyno on it and it was right under 300hp... which is about right for it to be able to beat a 5l mustang as bad as i did... it just wasnt enough power fro me... so i built the 355 400+hp always sounds good to me

Just so happens i have one that i\'ll get rid of pretty cheap. TCI 2200-2500, only has about 3000 miles or less on it. PM me and we can talk. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

i\'m running a 480 lift cam with a stock converter and the thing idles worth shit. I would get a stall if you go that big. I can get you a brand new Elgin cam 223 duration at .050 lift and 447 duration for $114 with springs and lifters. Or just cam and lifters for $80. I\'m running the same brand cam and love it. It would be perfect for a 305. PM me if your interested.

back in the day GM had a problem with \"soft\" cams the worn/ misssing cam lobe happened some what often. good luck with the project.

i agree with 4more, chevy cams are just known for rounding off... it generally has nothing to do with anything else, the 305 in my caprice ran fine untill 80k and all of a sudden the cam rounded off two lobes, i put a new cam in and no problems, it\'s a common thing for chevy\'s, happanes a lot with cheaper aftermarket cams too so makesure you get a good brand name
