There isn\'t necessarily an easy answer to that question, there are alot of things to consider. My first question is....does your truck have a 4.3 TBI (Throttle Body Injection) or is it the 4.3 CPI (Central Port Injection) Vortec engine? If it is a 4.3 TBI AND you are looking for a just a daily driver, I would say go with a 350 TBI engine from the same year as your truck. The major benefit is that you can re-use alot of your existing components (ie. TBI unit, Wiring harness, transmission if it is a basic setup, your front accessories on the serpentine belt, and you can probably use your stock radiator too, again depending on the setup) you can most likely even re-use your computer as long as you get a chip from a fullsize truck with the 350. By the way, I recommended the 350 there because the stock TBI 4.3 engines put out about the same hp and tq as the 305 TBI, so if you upgraded to the 305 it would be like a waste of time. Now, like I said, IF you have a 4.3 TBI, that would probably be the EASIEST setup to go with. Otherwise, there isn\'t one engine that is necessarily going to be less complicated than another..........probably the simplest after that would be just yanking your FI setup out alltogether and throwing a carbed motor in there. A few notes about throwing a Vortec motor in there.....I would imagine that to be the biggest pain in the ass out of any V8 swap. Aside from the most complicated wiring (I think its 96 individual wires?) you also need to replace all of your fuel hoses with hydraulic grade hose (its gotta handle like 80psi) and get a high pressure fuel pump. Those are the majors, I\'ve heard some other serious complications too. Just to let you know also, you will need special motor mounts, exhaust manifolds or headers, and a special oil pan to clear the front differential on your truck. My advice is to purchase the JTR conversion manual, and study as many past posts on this site as possible to help you get some information and make an informed decision as to what engine you are going to go with. Good luck and welcome to the site!

my advice...the 4.3 tbi has close to 160-175 horse.....the 305 has just a tad more, and the 4.3 cpi has a little over 200 horse(i think) and the 350tbi has a little more than 180 base horse....the only real thing that is different is the torque. dont hack it. if you just want more torque, then yeah go with the 305. but if you want more horsepower go bigger. ive got the tbi 350 out of a 91 fullsize and was easy to install, and i have an lt1 going into a 92 2wd, way different story.remember that the more complicated you go.....the bigger pain youll get.
