In 89 S10s switched from cable to electronic speedometers. There is a pickup in the trans tail and a DRAC (Digital Ratio Adapter Controller-??) located just behind the glove compartment, beside the original ECM if I remember correctly. The DRAC converts to digital pulses for the electronic speedo and can be used without the ECM for carb applications.

Wonder why it decided to stop workin when it was ready to turn 100,000 miles?

I would check out the whole gauge cluster. Sometimes those gauge clusters will go out. or it could just be one of the sensors. Does the speedometer work?
