do you adjust it the same way running as you would adjust them not running? take all the up and down movement out and add a half turn?

if you are doin it while it is running, you loosen them til it starts to clatter then tighten til the clatter stops the 1/4 to 1/2 turn then you are set.

Exactly like Greg said. Two addn. things:

* you may need to make the adjustments somewhat slowly, giving the lifter time to recuperate. If you tighten it a half turn with a snap of the wrist, it'll hang the valve open and kill that cylinder until the lifter recovers.

* And, as you may have guessed, this procedure can be an oily mess. But there are a few tricks to minimize the mess. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

otc adjusting running is the fastest and well , the only way in my book. Do to the fact what scotty said the lifter needs to pump up fully but my rule of thumb is after motor is warmed up loosen the rocker till chatter wait a few sec then tighten slowly till chatter quits then 1/4 turn more do all in this manner. Then shut motor down wait about 20 min and start it back and go back over all of them loosening and tightning oncemore. as far as adjusting cold and motor not running its not accurate but a close adjustment and is always fallowed by adjusting while running.. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Also very true in "my book". http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

......... Setting the valves with the engine running as described above is the foolproof method. Setting them with the engine shut off can lead to disaster & engine damage unless done properly. And it is far too easy to make a mistake.

........... Personally, I set them with the engine shut down. BUT only because I've done this many times, I am confortable doing it, AND I still double check the procedure.

........... That said, setting the valves "hot & running" is also the most accurate way.

Ditto for me, what Scotty said, in the 8 or so SBC V8's I've built over the years I have always set the preload cold, some while the engine is still on the stand and never had a problem with it, and some of them were even 3/4 turn past 0 lash... I set them by the book using the twirl the push rod method, you just have to have the crank in the write position and have a good feel for where O lash is while tightening the rocker retaining nut down slowly, stop at the point where the pushrod resists turning, then put the amount of preload you want, 1/4 1/2 or 3/4 turn...

But then what does this have to do with cooling? I think this should be in the engine forum...
