i finally put my gen 1 350 in my 86 4cyl truck saturday. i have a normal starter, and it hits the frame rail. it is bolted in and just touching. i have a carter fuel pump, and it is sitting on the frame rail too. i know of 2 trucks local that have claimed to use a stock starter, and i know the fuel pumps on neither one were that close to the frame. i'll have to jack the motor u an inch to get the pump back out. i used the conversion mounts and 2.8 frame mounts from here, and i am using the bottom holes in the mounts to get the engine up as high as possible. i don't know what else to do but use my 4 pound short handled frame clearancing tool. anyone ran into this? i am already broke, i can't afford a mini starter right now, and i want to hear this thing make some noise.

are you sure your 2.8 frame mounts are in the right position and not upside down? I have the exact same truck as you and am running a stock starter and have ran a stock mechanical fuel pump as now i am running a electric pump due to no fuiel pump lobe on hyd roller cam. the only thing I can think of is either you have your 2.8 mounts in incorrectly or your motor is too far back but that doesn't sound like the problem. the problem sounds like your mounts are bolted in wrong. Just a suggestion but hope this helps some.

Did you put the left mount on the right side? I meen did you swap them side to side accidently?
I haven't used the mounts from this site, but on the 1 set of mounts I bought, one side was longer than the other. After the first set I had built my own mounts for all the rest.

the frame mounts have one hole on one side and two on the other. i can't remember top or bottom, but you get the picture. i would have had to drill holes in the frame to put them in upside down. on the conversion mounts, if i put them on the wrong side the right one will cover the fuel pump, so i know they are right too.

I used a stock starter and had just enough room to slide it in end up and then connect the wires. Was a pain but fit. Here is a pic of the passenger side mount (http://www.s10v8.com/myegallery.php?&do=showpic&pid=4496&orderby=) in place
you might be able to get some clearance using a couple of well placed washers on the conversion mounts.

I had this problem as well and found that my motor was not sitting square from side to side /left to right also i was using a procomp mini starter and that was also a problem switched to a stock 4cyl s10 starter it was stronger and fits better also covered w/heat shield. fuel pump issue you must get a short neck muti placement pump. had this issue as well i blocked it off and went with electric w/ fuel cell . these are just my fixes and trial and errors .

i'll double check the sqareness if i can get back on it tomorrow. i was just thinking about that while i was looking for starters. i found mini starters on ebay for $55 and $12 shipping.
