If put in a 700r4 lock out kit, because I have a carb. When replacing working on the engine I lost the va* switch. I replaced it with another type. Now If the converter does on unlock would it make the transmission stay in 4th Overdrive and cause the engine to lug down on take off? there is a addjustment on the switch but how do I know and how to get the va* set right? Has anyone ever had a problem like this? You guys have been great help in the past love this sight.

You can use the vacuum switch if you want. GM used them to help with part throttle response to drop lockup while acc due to lower vacuum the switch would disconnect the circuit. Once the engine load would reduce, the vacuum would increase and the circuit would re-engauge. The 4th gear lockup normally effects only 4th gear. You hit the brake and the brake switch disconnects the same circuit. This switch can be substituded with a cruise control brake switch, The extra circuit disconnects when you hit the brakes. You can try to adjust the vacuum switch, but you can substitute an regular on/off switch in it's place. The circuit should still be controlled by the brake switch and you can choose to leave the lockup off at will. Turn it on only while cruising.

The break switch was working before, so if I understand you right the Vac. switch should not keep it form unlocking, only the break switch no mater what the vac does. I guess I could have a bad ground or break switch, wire. I will check. I started it up drove down the road shifted great, stoped, then the truck lugs bad so that is why I think it's still in overdrive.

Lin, the brake switch and the vacuum switch are wired in series. Ether switch will cut the circuit. The best to check, to chase the 12volts. The 4 prong plug on the trans harness should be receiving 12 volts if the brake switch is good and the vacuum switch is pulled by vacuum. Try to jump the vacuum switch, then the brake switch connectors while testing for 12 volts being present at the trans. The brake switch should be first from the fuse block, then the vacuum switch. Good luck. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

The brake switch should have 2 connections with 2 spades each. The brake lights work from one set, and the other set is for the trans lock up. The switch in the neutral postion would be open for the brake lights and closed for the trans. Hit the switch and the postions change. Closed for the brakle lights and open for the trans. If you are feeding constant 12 volts to the trans connector, the lock up convertor can not disengauge. This would cause the lugging.
