I recieved an engine this weekend. Ran block number and mortec cam up with 3 options.

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro

3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial

3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

I need to how to tell which one I have. It has an external balance on the back of the crack. The timing pointer is in the center of the cover. everything look original, never been taken apart.

I loked up the heads and it shows 75-80 350/400 heads. oh well, it was hoping for a 327.

that block will accept a crank from a 302, 327, or 350. they are all 4" bore engines, the only difference is the stroke. you need a 3.25 inch stroke. there are a couple different size main journals, you would have to know your casting numbers. www.mortec.com was the best website for chevy casting numbers from cranks to intakes, and everything in between but i can't get the site to work now.

And when I had a 327, I was wishing for a 350! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I would do anything for another 327

So pull a head, measure the stroke from bottom dead center to the top and see what you've got... If it's not a 3.25 stroke check into getting a crank that is, I will bet that is a large journal block if it's 69 to 80... I think you will also need longer rods or different pistons, but I'm not sure which having never built a 327, I'll let someone else help you with that... I see there is also a good possibility that it is a 4 bolt main block also, wouldn't that be nice! Good luck...

all you have to do is pull the pan off and check the casting number on the crank to see what you got chances are you have a 350 with a 2442 350 cast crank which is common

The 0010 can be either a two bolt main or 4 bolt main. Most are 350s that I have seen.
