I've been watching my local Craigslist for an NV 3500 5 speed transmission. Problem is, all I find are 4x4 units with transfer cases attached. Just today there are two or three for about $300 each.
Don't want to make my 86 lt1 s-truck into a 4x4. Does any know if it is too difficult / expencive to make a 4x4 tranny into a 2 wheel drive ??
One last thought, has anyone ever run a 4x4 model in a two wheeldrive? I'm wondering if the t-case would hang to low or just not fit http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
Thanks,
A-Danhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gifhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_drink.gifhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wave.gifhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_hammer.gifhttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_crazy.gif

One of the differances between the 2wd and the 4wd trans are the output shaft is longer on the 2wd. ANd there is a shaft housing for the driveshaft. The 4wd one has a shorter shaft and has the large end open to bolt the transfer case to.
As for putting the 4wd tranny is in a 2wd, the transfer case would be hang too low and hit the ground.
You could have the 4wd retrofit to a 2wd but the cost of parts and labor would make it not worth it.
I, had repaired a noisey 2wd tranny with the parts from a good 4wd unit. If the shafts were shot in the 2wd tranny I would have toossed it away cause the new parts would have cost to much to make the job worth while.
My 4 cents.

Space,
I sort of thought that about the output shaft and the low hanging t-case.
Was sort of hoping I could score a dirt cheap 5 speed to take the place of my 4l60e.

Understood, Just keep looking. I'm sure you'll find what your looking for.
Have you thought about going with a 4spd. A muncie might be a little pricey, but I would think you should be able to find a t-10 for a resonable cost. Then thiers always ;old faithful'---the saginaw.
There are multiple gear ratios for each tranny.

if you want to change it over it is cheaper to buy an old junker 4wd that way you have everything you need. but swapping it all over isnt so bad if you have all the stuff ready to go!!!! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

283chev,
This was my first S10 swap, an LT1 at that. I have a great bodied 2wd 86 ex cab, so it was a no brainer that would be my S10 swap.
If I ever recover from this swap http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_hammer.gif I would like to do an all wheel drive with a Bravada/Astro trans/t-casehttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_headbang.gif and a hot engine (probably not another LT1, can't afford any more $200 distributer caps http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif ).
Current pickup is [going to be] a daily driver, bone stock. Current 4l60e is on life support and the plug is about to fall out of the wall http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif . So a five speed that can handle the engine torque and boat towing over the mountains is in order.
