I was offered a free running mid 70's 454 out of a truck today by my cousin who lost his storage. Got me thinkin What would it take to replace the small block with a big block? Any body know any where that I can find info on doing this swap? I've read some old posts, but no one is to specific and they're pretty old. What about headers? Cooling? Can I get away with my th 350?

SCORE!!!! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
Yes you can use your t-350. It will bolt right up.
But if you were given a big block, take it!
Unless you really don't want it. Then you could always sell it. (to me) http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
I have seen a few installed in the s-10 but haven't payed enough attention to advise you in any reasonable way.

yea you better grab that bib block while you can, but the s10's i've seen with big block havent had headers they were useing chevelle manifolds. thats pretty much all i've heard about them.

It seems like everyone has steering issues with manifolds, so I figured I can make my own headers if need be. Don't worry, The big blocks mine, just gotta go get it this weekend.

454 from a Truck, yup... I believe is 1.5" wider than a car motor. THere tall deck blocks. Hopefully the intake is there or else you have to buy one specificly for a truck motor.
Sorry, just thought of it.
SPace!

You won't need a special intake if it is a 454. The tall deck motors are 427's that came out of industrial trucks. They are referred to as "truck" blocks. The 454 will be standard deck. There are a couple places that sell headers you need. Lemons Headers (http://www.lemonsheaders.com/) and Stahl Headers (http://www.stahlheaders.com/) makes headers for S-10 big blocks. Of course you could always make your own headers. The easiest thing to do for the steering would be a rack and pinion setup. Unisteer (http://www.unisteer.com/mm5/merchant.mvc) has just come out with a bolt in rack for S-10. I believe RayL put one on his blazer, so you may PM him about the kit.

Thanks Grimm the last few big block chebys that I had were 427's and I had that issue with all of them. Just thought that the 454's were the same.
Sorry. Space. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
