700R4 information

I am not familiar with the 700R4 transmition is this a 3 speed with overdrive. Would it be a good one to use on a drag truck.

yea they are pretty good transmissions and you are right they are 3 speed with overdrive

how much power are you running? If they are not fully rebuilt, they wont handle much power.



They have a very low first gear. 4 speed tranny (3 with OD)



What are you planning on using the truck for? occasional track or full time track?



if its a full time track truck, just go turbo 350

Hey, if you want a 4 speed auto and go racing then choose a 200r4. The 200r4 came in monte carlos and grand nationals. The first gear is not as steep as the 700. The gears are closer together in the 200 and look what a grand national can do. Look into it before the jump. The only bad thing from a 700 is the large seperation between 1st and 2nd. I think some of you may have it wrong, the 700R4 and 200R4's are 4 speed overdrive transmissions, they have four forward gears and an overdrive when the torque converter locks up in fourth gear... It is essentially a 5th gear in overdrive because there is no slippage in the torque converter when locked... Normally the lockup system will only work when it shifts to 4th gear and unless you are accelerating fairly hard it is sometimes hard to distinguish the difference between 4th and overdrive, it just feels like a 4th gear but it's more like a 123-5 shift... This is what makes them the best for fuel economy and cruising on the highway... For racing your better off with a TH350 or TH400 but a 200R4 may work well also if built properly...

The truck is going to be driven only on the drag strip so I am not looking for the overdrive. So what I get is the tubro 350 are the 400 would be the best. I am only looking at maybe 400 hp.

true tahoe, most have lockup converters, but that is not a gear.
