400 block, w/ 4 inch stroke crank, 6in rods, 1inch comp height pistons. 4.125 bore for 427 4.155 for 434ci.

I hope mine will be finished by the fall. I dropped it off at the engine shop about a week ago.

2.02 1.60 heads will absolutely not get it done on a 427.

if your going over a 406 i heard it better to use a dart block. i heard making a 400 larger than 406 just makes the block weaker

I also recomend going with an aftermarket block to make the 427. Whay not just buy one already built? I know price is high, but what are you saving buy building? The machine shop and all the parts and etc all add up to an extreme expence. What will the block cost? The guess is about $1500. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif The other thing is 396 cubes from a 350 block is the max that direction for a stroker. The 400 block is thinner on the piston walls and agree not more than 408 cubes.

I think that Motown sells 427 AND 454 SB short blocks.(and complete motors) I think the Motown and Dart bare blocks are going for over $2K now. And like Melonhead said, if you're going to buy one of their blocks, might as well just have them build the whole short block. $5Kplus. ouch!

...........I guess it's open for debate whether ANY SBC head could keep up with 454 cubic inches in race engine trim.....

so what do you guys think is the best stroker to go with for street/mild drag? i really dont care for the 383 because everyone has one now, i want something different thanks

Build a 406, w/ 6in rods, flatops, use a solid lifter Lunati 40134 cam. Victor jr or RPM airgap intake w/ 190 - 200cc runner head. A demon 750 mech sec. carb should top this combo off.

From experience this motor will turn 6500+ rpm and have good street strip manners. use a 2800 stall for an automatic with a min of 3.73 gears for a 3200+ lb car.

Good luck.

i have a 406 same as he described, my heads are diff though. w/ a victor jr. holly 750 dbl. 580 solid lift cam. rite now i think my coverter is 2800. is a good street driver, idle is a lil too low in gear but races high in neutral, i need a bigger stall. id say go 3500 or bigger. off the line its a slug. i ran 11.3. w/ a better converter id be in the high 10's. maybe even lower who knows.

Sounds like you're looking to change your hairstyle, not choose an engine! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

But seriously, to decide on an engine to build..... are you starting with a clean slate? No block of your own? Then consider your budget, if any. Nothing wrong with the 406s mentioned.

Also, did you find out exactly what those heads are? No sense building an engine around the heads unless you know they're what you need.

If your serious about this, buy the book HOW TO BUILD BIG INCH CHEVY SMALLBLOCKS There is alot of really useful info on 383's and up. They even have some dyno pulls and recipes. Personally I'm likin the 406 right now, but finding a block is tuff and expensive these days.

I understand the idea of "stroking" an engine but i think 99% of the time its.....useless. a 350 or 400 would be just as good. Being different isnt always good just like more stroke isnt always better.

regardless if everyone has one the 383 is the best choice. i priced a 396 stroker complete long block and with parts and labor the price was right at 6K you can buy an already built 383 short block for under 2K if you look hard enough. then use your heads. plus a 383 mostly on the street will survive a large cubic inch SB isnt really meant to be a daily driver. you will encounter alot of problems.
