my starter (jegs pro starter) seems to spaced too far from the flexplate , and is or has stripped the teeth where it contacts the ring gear, only about the first 1/8" any one know another route to take besides crank replacement?

Are there shims behind the mounting plate? If so remove them. Elongate the bolt holes to allow room to slide starter in.

or maybe the flywheel on backwards or not seated all the way?

IF its the same starter I just installed, then they got issues. THe trouble your have is its too far away. The trouble I had was it was too close to the flywheel and would sound like a rod knock when it hit.

What I did was used the shims in the kit it came with. Since your is too far away, remove the shims it came with.

And just for HAHA'S check the flywheel so its not on backwards.

Gotta love them aftermarket parts!!!

my problem is that the starter is too far forward not too low the gear to gear clerance is good its just not getting the full width of the flywheel. and its a 383 so i have to use a balanced flywheel (got the whole flywheel not the plate) and i can look at the lip that goes toward the trans so its not in backwards http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

did you make sure it was seated all the way? starter dosnt have to sets of holes does it? if not i would say it is messed up or not the right starter for your truck.you should get some pics of it and email them to the company.

If your block has been align bores in the main bearings, you can have the crank,(and flywheel), too far up in the block. A freind had 2 different engines like this. If so your starter needs to have some material taken off. Any machine shop can do it. I've done it with a grinder in a pinch.
