Do the patriots headers fit pretty much the same position as the hedmans do. i don't feel like changing mounts.

Using Sanderson shorties 1 1/2" with mini starter and no heat shield. Have never experienced any problems.

I know this question is about headers but, my engine bay and starter runs cooler because: no headers- iron manifolds, no mini starter- direct drive 4.3 starter, no heat shield and no problem with starter pushing 10:1cr 355 hot... I know I sacrifice a little HP but I don't notice it... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I've got hedman shorties with a 454 starter off of a 98 truck (I think that's the year) and it's an 8lb mini starter from the factory and have never had any problems. also, that starter is for a 168 tooth flywheel

Where do you run you tranny lines at with shorties headers theres no room. I got a frame rail tranny cooler to install.

Here's a pic of what I did. And if you look closely, the one line is running toward the rear, with an aluminum line from the radiator toward the rear. That's a sort of "accidental" frame rail cooler. At one time I had a small trans cooler with fan under the driver's seat. I had to go because of exhaust changes. So the line is just looped, the fluid running through the aluminum line all around the cab and back again. Never a cooling issue.

The lines coming from the trans are pre-made JIC/AN lines I got from Grainger. Stainless steel, teflon lined, brass ends.

And regarding TypeO's original problem, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the "hot start" kits available. Sure, it's best to keep header heat off the starter, but that "hot start" kit,(which is basically just a Ford Solenoid, some wires and instructions) apparently does the trick.

when I first installed mine, the starter lasted less than a year, due to heat issues. Replaced it and installed a hot start system with bump switch and had no further problems.
