I'm still lusting for a NV3500 for my LT1 powered s-truck. I see tons of 4wd versions, but rarely 2wd ones, other than spendy ones on greedbay. Wondering if that tranny goes by any other names or numbers??

maybe try looking for a T-5 out of a mid 90's V-8 camaro. i don't think that it's as strong as the NV3500. but the torque rating should be high enough for the power you are running. i think that the tougher (V-8) T-5's have a 21 spline input shaft. the weaker ones (like ones behind the 4 cylinder trucks) are only 18 or something like that.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I thought I've seen it referred to as an MG5, but maybe that was a different transmission all together. Either way, I don't see any references to it on ebay, so I don't know.

Think I read in S10V8 book that the Camaro transmissions are not strong enough. I'll probably only see the 1/4 mile a couple of times (built my truck as a daily driver, boat tower and occasional manure hauler!) but still want it to be bullet proof. That's why I want the 3500.

check the junkyards. they came in pretty much all s10s with the 4.3 and a stick. the t-5 was behind the 2.8s. it is also called a new venture 3500. good luck, it is worth it.

I don't think I'd exactly call them bullet-proof, from what I've read. I have one in my truck, behind the 4.3, but when I put the v8 in, I'll probably be ditching it. They definately are no speed-shifter trans if ya know what I mean.. haha.

hes got a point. they are a good toy trans but not for racing. the ratios suck and the shift is about to feet long. lol. but the do make a hurst short throw for them. if you want a bullet proof trans go for a 6 speed.

Getrag HM290, 5LM60, NV3500, are all names for these 5 speed trans, depending on which year.

It's also known as a Getrag New Venture 3500, and uses RPO codes MG5, M50, and M51 depending on the application (S-10, C/K-series, etc.) The MG5 has the granny crawler 1st gear (C/K), the M50 is the typical S-10, and the M51 is the newer NV3550 but I don't know if it's physically compatible.
Unfortunately they are typically hard to find and as a result they tend to be pricey. I could not find any in my local junkyards and ended up ponying out $600. I love the trans so far, but if I were to do it again I'd probably hold out for a T56 for a few hundred more.

Thanks for everyones tips here! I have a line on one a nv3500, waiting for the fellow to get back to me. Hopefully all goes as planned and I'll be trading that 4l60e with pudding for clutch packs for a real transmission!
I'll post back when the deal is done.

Well Crap, I shoulda kept my mouth shut. Guy was selling a nv3500 on Craigslist for $175, wrote him right away Sunday AM, problem is I have to work weekends. Wrote back to him to pickup Moanday and it was gone http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif
Next time I won't jinx myself and only talk about it after it's in my hands
