I am thinking of swapping an ls1 into my ext cab s10. It has a 4.3 now. I was wondering about fuel mileage. Anyone that has done the swap what kind of mileage do you get. I am getting 23 mpg now. I thinking I should get the same mileage or better. I know the cars that have the ls1 in them get up to 28 to 30 mpg. I know i am pushing more air than them but am hoping that I can get okay mpg from the swap.
I think the extra torque should help with the gear I have now.

Most people that install v8s in there s10 aren't looking for fuel mileage. It is what it is. If theres something wrong and the truck is a fuel pig then they start to replace 'wrong parts' ie remove unhooked up computer controled carbs for tuned Edlebrocks carbs and other brands.
I have done over 6 swaps, and stupervised over 5 or 6 or more??. None yet are LS1 powered. the lastest will be finished in a few weeks - an LT1 copo package in a 4x4. We had planned a LS1 swap but got a good deal on the cop car package before the cash was turned over for the LS driveline.
There are a very few here that have done that swap. They may chime in when they get back to the site.

To add to my last post, No your not wasting your time here. There is alot of valuable info here. Unfortunatley your trying something 'new' and theres not too many people that have tried it yet. If you start your ls swap keep us informed as I'm sure there are other people with the same questions you have. But you'll have the answers.
Back in the day when I built my 1st s10v8 there was no 'book', there was no s10v8.com. there was no internet. Cell phones were car phones and the suit case bag phones were just coming out. Basicly all 'hot' swaps have to start somewhere.
Anyways... Welcome to the site...

I havent done a ls1 swap, but i can tell you what i know,..... 98-02 camaro ls1 with a 6spd will get around 32 mpg on the highway... those cars slice through the air like a hot knife goes through butter. Second...the ls1 engines are computer controlled.....which means they can actually "learn" your driving styles: for instance the pcm will realize if your driving full throttle everywhere and increase the injector pulse width......and vise versa if you drive like an old granny it will adapt and shorten the pulse width.......another thing, s10's are lighter than f-bodys....there are alot of factors that have a role in determining mileage.
32mpg i feel is a stretch but they will get low 20s all day long. injector pulse width....the longer it is the less milage your getting. Other than that ...its just nature of the beast. Nothing special to pulse width on a ls engine.

Spacecadet is right. He has been here for a long time, matter of fact, he wasn't at the last supper but was there in time to clear the table. I have a LT1 out of a 1995 Z28 in my S10 with 3:73 gears. I get between 21 and 23 on the open road, not much different than the 4 cylinder that was in it before. When you consider the increase in torque with a V8, you won't need to put your foot down as much to go FAST.

Thank all of you for your replies. I know that at first mileage will be bad, playing with new toys. I drive my truck 100 miles a day. It seems as though the 4.3 is having a hard time climbing the little hills here in La. When the clutch fan comes on it like an anchor has been thrown out. I would like to see say 25 mpg.
Again thank you for your replies.

not a far streatch at all my m6 Lt1 mildly modded has done 29mpg(452mi.to a tank)
a friends Ls1 408 m6,3.73s runs 11.3 and got 26mpg on the fwy.....
so i would conclude the same drivetrain in a lighter vehicle with less frontal area would get the same mileage....
as far as the "wasting my time here"comment you have to realize we have a few different time zones that frequent this board and i cannot see a bunch of people sitting on their computer all day....gotta make the $$$ to enjoy this hobby....in a nutshell try a little bit more patients there are MANY experienced mechanics here that have done or are familiar with any situation........BTW welcome to the board i hope you will find all info you are looking for and also share your experiences with us.....Rudy

I guess my choice of words were wrong.
Do you mean you got 29 mpg in a s10 with a LT1? I am guessing m6 means 6 speed.

im sorry,i have a 96 z28 and that was what i was referring to......29mpg
an s10 should get close especially with an Ls1,those engines seem to get a bit better fuel mileage..

ISN'T THAT BETTER MILEAGE THAN WHAT IT SHOULD AHVE GOTTEN NEW? IF I CAN REMEMBER RIGHT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO ONLY GET 26 ON HWY. A FRIEND OF MINE HAS A 2004 VETTE THAT HE HAD TWIN TURBO'S ADDED ON. WE DROVE ABOUT 280 MILES ON SOME HWY AND TWO LANE GETTING OVER 30 MPG. NOW WHEN YOU LAID INTO IT WE SAW 14 TO 17 MPG. IN THE FUTURE I SEE A LS1 400 PLUS CI WITH TWO TURBOS UNDER THE BED. MY S10 IN MY DREAMS WILL FLY..

I have a 96 blazer with a LS1 swap and I average around 17 mpg around town and 24mpg on the highway. I have a 4L60e and a 3.73 gear. And I do have a heavy foot.
