I have a 1979 350 block, I notice tonight that the cast iron hump were the dip stick goes into is welded on three sides. The welds are very neat and very professionally done. Has any body seen this before. I don't think it will cause a problem since it is not part of the combustion chamber. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Sorry I gonna say more info or a pic would better helps us figure out what your talking about. THe dip stick shouldn't be welded to the block. I could asssume that the guy wohm did it had the dip stick poping out on hil occaasionly. Me I would have bought a new dip stick. I think my last one cost 13.00.

What i found out was that the guy before me had to move the dip stick to the passenger side of the block so they just welded a piece of cast iron to that side, works great.
Not sure of what it's called but blocks and heads are weld repaired like this useing a certain technique. Just a guess but sounds like a casting weld repair and I have heard that if done proper it works just fine.Maybe a welder with this experience will chime in and explain it for us,sounds interesting.

if done right it will hold. Theirs a couple different ways of welding cast iron, you can braze it if your good and you can stick weld it with a 6011 rod, but you need to get it red hot with a torch then weld it, reason why is because cast iron will crack, it cools faster than a weld.
BruceS10: I would check that out a little closer to make sure it was done right, it may be a nice looking weld but if its cracked its no good, I my self would just throw it away, but if your gonna keep it than get it checked by a machine shop http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

It's called furnace welding. Bring the temp of the block up, weld it hot, and let the block and the weld cool off together.
