Shaft play

I have a noise coming from the trans on part or heavy throttle. Its sound like something spinning and is not catching. I took the tailshaft housing off and I can grab the shaft move it up and down or side to side. Is this normal or is it junk? Its a th350.

It according to how much play. Basicly the tail housing has a bushing in it which holds the yoke from rattling. With it disassembled I would think it could have a bit of play.

Inside your auto there are clutchs, bands,drums and discs. If something is starting to let go it could definitly make noise. My t-400 trans is still working but whines like a vintage school bus.

There seems to be the same amount of play with the housing on.

I just went threw this problem but caught it in time.(well to save the tail shaft) the driveshaft/rearend shop I go to just redid my ring and pinoin cause the pinion bearing went bad due to improper pinion angle. well they pointed out to me that my drive shaft was to long and showed me a very slight groove on the yoke. so they took 1/2 out of the shaft but did say if I didnt I was gonna waste that bushing in the tailshaft. 500 $ on the rearend 200 to shorten the driveshaft,new yoke and heavy duty u-joints I'm all good. be sure the noise isnt your rearend starting to howl. I learned the hard way that the pinion angle is critical. I have a 3 inch drop in the back angle wasnt enough . they said to put a 3 inch block with a 3 degree angle. shes smooth as can be now

How do I go about finding the right pinion angle and what should it be?

the shop instructed me what angle blocks to buy they also make shims I would of bought shims theyre cheap ( like 10 buck) but I had a cracked block so but the ones with the degree they told me 38 bucks.
