This is actually for my Malibu, but I am looking at using acrylic Urethane, and wanted to know if I need to prime the entire car. I tried my "new friends" over at the Malibu forum just for kicks, but I'm a new user (read outsider) over there. I have used straight enamals before, but want something a little more modern. I know you guys will come thru for me! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Yes,use a good primer -sealer for the entire car,it is designed to keep the new paint from having any problems with the old paint,I have done body/paint work as a hobby for 20+ years, and I am assuming your going to spray it yourself the fumes on all the newer paint products are much stronger,do all you can to protect yourself from the fumes, they are meant to be used with constant air supplied respirator

Thanks guys. I know about the hazards, and have the appropriate PPE. (WOW ain't you impressed!) Since posting this, I have contacted the manufacturer, and they said I don't 'NEED' to prime, as long as I am not going over Laquer, which I am not. So i guess I have a quandery, I trust you guys, but if He could sell me something else, I am sure he would. Just don't know. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

I don't agree with whoever you talked to. Anytime you are using a different paint system than what is already on the car, you absolutely should seal it. There are other situations that will give you trouble besides just lacquer. If it is acrylic enamel on the car and they didn't add hardener when they shot it, you will have a complete mess if you don't seal it first. Save yourself some grief later on, and seal it http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I use u-tech high solids sealer over paint and epoxy sealer over bare metal. just painted my truck with u-tech 3.8 and there's a little orange peel to wet sand and buff. I had to add a little slow reducer and move the gun quicker to get the metallic to flow evenly.
this stuff really stinks so use new cartridges and store them in a ziploc bag... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
the sealer keeps scratches from bleeding through and gives you a uniform basecoat to shoot... some metallic colors are a little transparent and it makes shooting easier.

OK,OK,Ok. I give. What is a good inexpensive product to use. I am on a pretty tight budget, like I need to do the primer for under $50 if possible. You guys are the best!! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

cheapest would be lacquer primer. I used it over the factory clear coat with no problems... but if you're not sure what's there you could have a major mess.
sand first with 220 on the DA, prime, block with 180, build up the low spots, wet sand with 320, wipe it down with solvent and shoot it.
u-tech sealer and single stage paint will cost about 250 to paint a car. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I went and picked up PPG MP213. It's a sealer, as you all suggested. Thanks for all your help. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
