I have seen a lot of this lately, and I guess I am gonna get on my soapbox.

Some guys (mostly new guys) are resurrecting old (read ancient) posts. They seem to end up off topic, and real confusing to me, and it seems I am not alone.

So, anywhoo, I guess we can all do our part. If it is relavent (technical) and you need clarification, go for it. But if you want to drop your .02 on some guys opinion on fuel costs, or family issues from 2 years ago, think twice. I know I don't make the rules, I just think someone needs to say something.

And maybe we could lock post after a certain period of time (Mike, what do you think?) I have seen this on other sites, after like 3 or 6 months they get locked. Just a thought, might work, might not.

I will get off my soapbox now, thanks for hearing me out.

I AGREE,nothing like seeing someone answer a post that is 2 or more months old!

Like you, I DO NOT make the rules, but I DO agree with you 100%.

I sent a PM to one member, politely asking that they stop such activity, and explained WHY it was an issue for me.

It seems to have made a small dent in the issue, but I am glad to see someone with more "seniority" post about the issue publicly.

Mike and the senior members seem to have kept a good handle on the forums to this point, and I trust they will continue to do so.

I want to say again, this is one of the best run Forums (regardless of topic) that I participate in, GOOD JOB, and a pat on the back to Mike and anyone else involved in making it what it is.

Thanks for the support guys. If we can all just "remember" to do this ourselves, and try to coach the new guys, we will be in much better shape.

So what's the time limit on a post?

Do we lock them after a set time from the original post time or lock them after the last post or what?

I personally do not see it as a "problem" at all.
And locking threads may be more of a problem than a solution.

With the new software the thread owner should be able to lock their own thread (Premium Members)

Any thread older then the new software or older then June 5th 2008 the thread owner would not receive a notification of a new post so therefore would not be inconvenienced by a post being made to an old thread.
The only way someone would be notified of a new post in a "old thread" would be if that member had subscribed to a forum in which that thread lived in.

As far as any rule to posting on an old thread, there are none, if someone feels the need to resurrect a thread from 2002 then so be it I guess, what's the real harm?

I'll be the first to apologize. Although I didn't dig em up, it seems I contributed to a thread that was from early this year. I personally don't see the harm, but that's not for me to decide.

But while we're on the subject, I'd love to see some more activity though; so if it's from diggin up threads, so be it. I've already seen PLENTY of threads that the OP started to get some advice, got it, and didn't even reply back to say thanks or give an update. In my opinion, that would be very frustrating to those that helped, and possibly deter them from helping the next guy.

I'm just a jerk that's been lurking since well before the changeover, so my opinions can be taken with a grain of of you know what.

I understand about old posts being old posts but, old posts to new members are new posts with old dates to new members. Even if writen years before, the info doesn't expire. Sure... stuff like the fuel price post is a lengthy read but I think it is QUITE FUNNY. You can read how people complained that the gas was so high at 2.25 a gallon that they were going to ride their bicycle. A few years and posts later there saying the same thing when the gas price peaked at 4.50 a gallon. SO my point is even old posts have a right to be here and to be answered. Everybody has the right NOT to click on the post if they really don't want to read it.

MY 2 cents aren't worth 2 penny's. Space!

Mikeal, I don't think anyone has an issue with people bring back old threads that have to do with technical items. I think what really irked droptop (as it did me when i saw it) was a thread where a guy wrote about some family problems he had been having and then someone brought it back up several months later. droptop just didn't want to call anybody out because nobody here wants to run off new guys. I am sure the OP of that thread would rather not be reminded of that family problem.....that he probably hadn't been thinking about for a while. Should we lock old threads because of it? I don't think so. Should people use a little common sense before they post on a thread about somebody's family problems? YES. just because somebody is venting about their family......doesn't mean you get to hop on and make a smart ass comment. that isn't acceptable one hour or one year after the original post.

Obviously, some people just read what they want to. As you can see, I think the technical data never "expires". I said I don't make the rules. I asked Mike about locking, and I didn't realize I can lock a post I start, so thank you. Sorry to get everyone riled up, wasn't the intent, forget I said anything.

with the new points system you can actually lose points for posting on an old thread at the price of 1 point per day past 180 days old.
So a post in a thread 200 days old would cost you 20 points and so on...

Now there is a solution!!! Thanks Mike, Oh, and I wasn't trying to be a butt by locking the thread, just wanted to see how it was done, open again.
