i have a tired 350 with 882 heads in my jimmy,i want to rebuild soon.but a friend of mine has a 327 block/crank that i can have.he says i can make more HP with the 327 than the 350.is this true or just an urban ledgend.i always thought more cubes=more power. ? thanks

Comparing the 2 I have had, the 327 seemed to love higher rpms. As for making more power, not sure my mentallity is "no replacement for displacment".

I think you would be alot happier with the 327, I was before I blew mine up and was never really happy with any motor after that. If it is basically a street truck then get the 327 and build that

I guess ill have to say it, theirs no replacement for displacement. Stick with the 350 since you already have it and you know its a good running core. Freshen it up .030 over new pistions all that good stuff. More cubes is always a good thing, I know iron headed 355 small blocks can run 10.50's all day long. And since your on the street, more torq will make you happy.

same bore less stroke does not = more power. depending on the situation, 90% of the time a 350 is a better choice

what about referencing the 350 vs the 5.3 (LS1) Vortech... I have a 2001 5.3L with a Vengeance Racing VRX2 Camshaft, Comp 918 Springs, stock pushrods, ported and shimmed oil pump, double roller timing chain/gear. Still have stock plugs, wires, coils, aluminum heads, etc..... all stock. I dynoed (11-3-08) 312.5 hp/322.5 tq on 87 octane. Stock rearend, 2wd, rwd 1987 S10 pickup, shortbed. That's what it's in! It scoots a lil bit... I haven't touched the lower end or nothing other than the above. Never been totally torn down other than the above work. Pretty good? My 1st project hotrod!

from my experiences with 327 and 350's, the 327 built identical to a 350 will tend to make just a little more power but at a little higher rpm. however, you tend to loose more torque than what is worth over the slight hp gain. also, with a smaller combustion chamber you need to have larger domes to get the same compression as a 350 on the same cc chambers. its damn hard to beat a 350 on the street or even on the track. some people argue that the 327 is better but most engine builders would go 383 or even 406 over a 327 and even a 350. i'd keep the 350 and stroke it, a 383 is a good street motor when build right.

they are the same bore. The "chamber" is on the head. So if you had a 350 and a 327 with the same heads...the stroke is what would cause the compression difference. Also, if a 327 makes more power than a 350...its the parts fault. Get a better combination of parts. Like i said, the only difference is the stroke and with all things being equal less stroke does not make more power.

thank you for your replies,i think i should go with the known good 350 as i dont have the $ to do it over ,not to mention the guy (giving me) the motor would probably expect a favor or 2 down the road. THANX AGAIN

lol, i was meaning to type cylinder volume, not combustion chamber. anyways everyone is entiltled to their own opinion about differences in crank stroke to rpm scale increases but i only know what i've build and from my experiences, a shorter stroke increases HP but with a lose of TQ that is not worth it.

The same tranny , gears and tires with seat of the pants testing method. the 350 would pull harder off the line. The 327 would build power at the upper end of the rpm band and chances are you wouldn't fell enough to notice.

My 2 cents worth

You want to put as much displacement under a set of heads as you can afford, plain and simple. In an oversimplified way of putting it, the heads determine horsepower whereas the displacement under those heads determines torque, therefore where the horsepower occurs.

All things equal, the 327 will rev faster, but only in neutral. Put a load behind both engines and the 350 will rev faster when it counts...accelerating the vehicle.
