The 4l80e is about the strongest you can do with the 4 speed trans. The problem is if you go carbed, that trans will need a standalone computer to make it shift. the trans you should look for it the 700r4 that is 93 and older has no computer controls. The 350, 400, and PG trans from the old days will work also. The most common set-ups are the 700r4 and the 350 long tail.
thanks for info. do you know where & how much i can get a standalone comp? will this take care of speedo 2? i have also heard there mite b some clearance probs. w/4l80e. i have a line on 1 of these trans. 4 a good price & i know they will handle big ponies.

They are not cheap. You may find one somewhere else.

#58. What is COMPUSHIFT?®

Compushift a ECM (Electronic Control Module) will control the shift & converter clutch lock-up for the 4L80E, 4L60E and 4R70W. Compushift is fully programmable and user friendly. Putting an electronically controlled model transmission into a street rod, truck, RV or any non-overdrive vehicle was never so easy.
Comes with complete instructions in a comprehensive manual.
Speedo can be convetered from VSS to manual. But why go through the expense.

no problem painless wiring sells a controler part # 66502 for that trans. you can order it from thier web site and it has all the info you need about the controler. made to work with carb engs. in street rods.

the speedo needs more then just a VSS in a 98 and up. the engine ECM handles all the gauge functions. so you will need to go F.I. with a custom harness to work the gauges. that was a huge delema for me and why i choose not to mess with my 2000 and buy my 88. and in my opinion i would stay away from painless for your stand alone system for a 4l80e. if your interested in making power you want a stand alone system that is capible of being programmed. so if your motor turns out to be a real beast a basic ecm wont work. it will need to be programmed for the power level you are running. personally unless your doing turbos with huge power and torque your best bet is to get a junk 700r4 and have it built or buy one that can handle the power you want to throw at it. even a stock 4l80e will need to be built in high power apps. and those are expensive.

yep. and if your ok with that then theres nothing wrong with changing the gauges. but i bought my blazer for a tad over 6K 2 1/2 years ago and its in AWSOME shape. i simply refuse to butcher it. we have a freind (melonhead and i) that found a 98 truck for $400. something that doesnt run but in good shape. i would do what i had to to that.

mine was only going to be a few mods than I kinda watched to much Overhaulin and HP and Trucks tv lol
this project is not off 2 a good start. just priced painless standalone computer 4 $775. my original plan was to use 1996 vortech that i have along w/4l80e and keep factory gauges. i bot the 98 cause it already had nice wheels & paint and a spotless interior. not looking like the best choice 4 a shadetree like me. just gonna take more time and $ than originally thot.lol! thanks 4 help so far.

well back it up a sec. just use the complete 96 vortec set up. if you use the F.I. set up you dont have to buy a carb, intake, and distributor. theres a savings. if you want to make serious power you can swap to the marine style intake with individual injectors instead of the fuel spider with the poppets. ($500) and then get an ECM and harness from current performance and you can slap almost any cam in that thing and make power. BUT the 350 vortec from a 96 3/4 ton (350/4l80e) make good power as is. put that in an s10 with a slightly larger cam that is still factory ECM freindly and a good set of 3.73 or 4.10 gears and you will be lovin the power that little 98 will be making. then you can use the ECM from the donor truck and the engine harness. all your gauges will work with the harness you can get from current performance. which would be just the harness another savings. before you spend any money make some phone calls and do some reasearch. you 1st stated making big power. if its just the stock motor and trans with a few upgrades you will be fine going the route i suggested.

yep I tell my wife the same thing but shes not to happy with me when I say that.
the thinking behind carb over sfi is that i would only have to buy intake[$185], and fuel press. regulator[$90] to make it run and work out my trany dilemma. i have carb and dist. already. plus i figured i could go fuel inj. l8tr when i had more $ to invest. i am working on about a $2500 budget 4 now. trany will probably eat up a grand or so.as 4 horsepower, i will b around 400 after mods. i dont have the donor truck w/motor, just have motor.

i say move to another trans. try to find a donor car. with that budget it can be done. that way everything is a swap. but you dont need a 4l80e for 400hp.

get some mini truckin mags. look at the complete trucks section on this site, talk to the ones you like get the pros and cons of what they have. really figure out what set up you want "what is your primary use going to be" then do your build. popular hot rodding has a complete build sheet for 700r4 on there web site very informative. but i think you should build what you want because you won't be happy endless it's what you want. every time i compromise to get something done, i end up going back and redoing to make it what i like.zr1 is right you could put a junk yard 350 in and do the tranny later with out to much trouble and you won't have any trouble selling the trans when you are done with it. take all the money and compleat the eng.
