got a 99' w/ airbag... how do I disconect it and push the shaft back.

I have read where they say to keep the column from spining buy useing the seat belt to tie it off ( an old tow truck trick ) ..

I know their must be wires for the air bag.. and maybe a sensor in the column...

I don't want to dammage anything , as I want to keep this feature.

Thanks for the help,
Jeff

also I'll post some pics

There is a sencer on the bumper not in the shaft just mark it so the wheel is where you want and go for it the bag will not go off with the battery unhooked

right and wrong. there is a sensor (2) under the front bumper. and (1) in the center of the floor around the console area. but if you unhook the battery you will be fine. (no motor in place im sure theres no batt right now) go inside at the floor. you have to peel back that rubber boot to get to the bolt. just unbolt it take the bolt out that holds the 2 shafts together then go out side and slide the shaft out. pretty simple. just line everything back up (steering wheel/front tires) when you go to reinstall.

Some vehicles have a clock spring in the column and if you turn the steering wheel more than a few turns in either direction it'll break and the air bag light will go on. Does GM have one like that? Most foreign cars do. I think that is what he is refering to.

yes gm uses a clock spring. when ever i disconnect an air bag column i duct tape it to keep it from turning remember to set wheels strait first before unhooking u joint and disconnecting it only goes back together one way but if wheels are turned and then they get moved you can install wrong.

Also for your info Im a extrication tech and you have to be carefull when the air bag is unpluged some have a small built in power supply and will have power while its unpluged ( just dont go slamming it around when its off lol)

ZR1,
as you can see in the pic above... I have slid back the rubber sleave and it exposed a white plastic peice located at the end of the bottem shaft, and the top shaft runs into it.

how do I disconnect this without breaking plastic?
