My first post! Found this site and gotta say I'm lovin it.

I just picked up 2 things that are going to keep me busy for a little while. I got a 2000 S-10 Xtreme 4.3 Auto and a complete LT1 from a 95 Camaro. Right now the LT1 is being built to 383, and I might go carb instead of f/i, just cause I want it to stick out of my hood like an old school hotrod.

Well that's all the further I'm along on the project, but I can't wait to get my hands dirty. Gotta nice lookin truck and a powerhouse engine and I'm ready to GO!!!

Couple of questions of course:
1. Is this engine matched to my stock tranny an okay combination? I want to stay auto.
2. If not, what engine is ideal for carb'd applications? I know a 87-91 camaro tpi is the easiest for F/I.

This is my first swap, so I wanna keep it as easy as possible. I just have this engine laying around, so it's cheaper, but hey I could always just sell it. Thanks for all the help!!!

Here's a pic of the truck...no bags or stupid switches for this Xtreme.

Welcome to the site. And upgrading your membership isn't a bad idea. As far as the carbed motor with your trans it won't work as far as I know. The 4l60E trans count on the computer and other motor sensors to make it shift. Might b a way around it. I don't know of one. But Melonhead could tell you if there is. Apparently he is the wiring genius.

I guess it is time for me to clock in!! Welcome to the site and yes, you have a nice truck. Lets cover a few things on some of the decissions you have already made. The 383 carbed: There is a carb manifold available directly from GMPP. This manifold does come with the provision for a standard HEI. This way, you can get rid of the optispark and the computer for the engine. The problem with this is the transmission. The computer to control the 4l60e. Well, there is a standalone transmission controller available just cost a bunch. Here comes the next problem, your dash. The truck you have has the computer control the dash gauges, ABS and the stereo. Things like the chime with the key in the ignition. The computer controls the air bags and so on. Now it may be feasable for you to keep the stock computer and fake it out. The computer would need the following inputs: RPM, Speed, Oil pressure, and not sure what else. I have not been down this road before. The other way to do this is to get rid of everything. Dakota Digital can make a dash for you. ZR1blazer had checked into that already. They would use your cluster as a reference and build one to fit the dash the same as OEM. The difference, you can feed things the cluster needs though their box vs your computer. This still does not cure your delima with the 4l60e. The thing you can do is to get a 700r4 with the VSS in the tail to mate to the 383. This would have the 40 tooth reluctor to feed the box or electronic speedo gauge. The other way would be to replace the gauges with AutoMeter gauges and clearance would be an issue. I think the aftermarket gauges are deeper than the dash will allow for a flush apperance.

This is your project. It would be easier in the long run to keep the EFI. The mileage and power from the LT1 is great. This way you can keep you computer and dash. You would have to get the fuel required to feed your monster. The 255LPH pump will take care of 500 NA HP. This would fit in the stock intank pump location. The hard lines in the engine bay would be adapted to the fuel ral and so on. Now back to the electronics. You can run both ECMs and piggyback them. This means the LT1 ECM runs the engine and the stock ECM is tapped into the loop to think it is running. This is accomplished by having yourself or someone else get the two harnesses merged together. Jimsperformance.com did mine. Mine is not piggybacked, but runs my dash in my 88 with teh Typhoon cluster.

Well, I may not have helped with your delima. Hopefully I gave you the info to make the wise decissions you need to make. If your truck was a first gen, the two computers would not be necessary.

Merging the two computer is not that hard to do. I have a 94 4X4 GMC Yukon on 44's that I put a tpi on. I used a computer out of a 91 Iroc with 305 tpi. Ordered a painless harness from jegs. Got online and got the wiring diagrams for the yukon and for the Iroc. Picked the wires that went to the trans and hooked them together. So like Melonhead said, I have the stock (yukon) computer that runs my trans and a Iroc computer that runs my motor. Works fine. But you will have to say goodbye to the glovebox, cause you will need to make room for the second computer. Unless you can find somewhere else to put it.

I hope he has a deep pocket book. The 383 built will be a good chunk. The nick nacks and the wiring and the adapters and Etc, etc will nickel and dime to death. HE HE.

^^ Oh man I know that's true. :)

I wanna thank you fellas for helping me out here. Yep, I guess the image in my head of a huge blower stickin out the hood are kind've shot with this engine, but hey...it'll still be pretty cool once I open the hood. LOL. I'll definately check into finding a descent tranny too.

Today was a little different on the project. I took apart all the trim plastics in the interior to prepare to sand and fiberglass. Also picked up a fiberglass tonneau for $50 belive it or not and not in bad shape at all...just needed repainted and the hardware. Next up...time to get dusty.

I know I went a bit far on my rambling. LOL. I wanted to give you some facts and get you to think on your goals. What are your goals? Is there a HP# your are trying to reach? You going for the look? If you want to get down and dirty with the LT1, then you need to know http://www.elliottsportworks.com/lt1.html . Lloyd Elliott is the man to go to with your HP goals. He is the one person that on LT1 forums mentioned over and over. You can get the heads redone by him and a custom grind for your cam. This of course is staying with the EFI.

Man you need to upgrade your membership so we can share stuff a little quicker. This once a day stuff is for the birds. LOL
