Well I got my batteries mounted and mostly wired up. Just have to hook up all the ends. Ran out of lugs for the cable so going to pick some up today and get that all hooked up. For future reference 2/0 wire is a b***h to work with. :s19:
Well just a little update since I haven't posted in a while. My block is STILL at the machine shop. Been there since March 11. They called monday and said I should be able to pick it up this friday. Maybe I can its like a 2.5 hour drive to get it. But atleast then I can start the assembly.:D Ready to get this thing to the track.

I have a button between the cab and bed to pop the doors open from the outside. Also, have a stainless cable running to the front of the truck under the hood you can pull to pop the doors as well. ( kinda a sercurity thing). As for the inside I fabbed a lever that sticks up beside the window. Here is a pic, its kinda hard to see cause of the sun.
And yes all the windows are lexan.

Cool Im a Fire Fighter and I do support at alot of races. When I saw your truck with lexan and no door handles I thought I hope he has a manual way to open the door from the outside. Its always good to show the fire support crew were that cable is so they know and ant searching for a way when you need them. I walk the pits everytime inspecting cars so I know were everything is on each car just in case.

I may, depends on what it runs. A track close by has a heads up index race once a month. Wanna run in it.(pays good) So may have to put some in it or may have to slow it down. Not sure what its gonna do.

Its a backhalf kit from checkard racing. 4 link with ford 9". I had it custom built for my app. The frame rails are 22" apart center to center. Axle is 39.25 flange to flange. 14" wide wheels with 7.375 bs.

little slow but i have fun screwing a motor together...
A few pics of the shortblock.
I finally got my head gaskets, so now I can finish the assembly and drop it in. Gonna try to have it in next week. I have had such a time trying to get these head gaskets. First I ordered them from my O'rielly on friday May 8, they said they could get them overnite. So when I went to pick them up Saturday they wasn't there. Well it was friday before I could get back up there and then they told me they sent them back cause I didn't come get them. So I ordered them from auto zone that day he said he could have them tuesday. Went to get them they only ordered 1. ONE!! I was like how can I build a sbc with ONE gasket, So they ordered the other one and it came yesterday. But all is good, when I went to pick them up the manager that ordered them originally gave me his discount cause of there mistake. So that worked for the best I guess.

A few pics of the shortblock.
Someone else that isn't afraid of a 2 bolt block.
The studs will help it.
I build what ever I have, too many people are trying to find 4 bolts and the majority of them never have enough power and compression to warrant it.
The best way with a factory block is to have a 2 bolt drilled and fitted with aftermarket splayed caps.
Nice lookig ride. I can't get pics of mine on here, wrong file type or some chit.

With a GM block on a 400 a 2 bolt studded is the only way I would go. I was gonna splayed cap it but after some research I decided it would be fine. Plus it is 3/4 filled with hard block.
Well I still don't have it in yet. I am having nothing but bad luck. I bought a Hamburgers oil pan that came with the pick up from summit. Ask the guy on the phone what pump to use with the pick up. He gave me 5 to choose from. So I go with a Moroso. Get it in have the pick up tack welded to the pump go to put it on it hits the pan. I called Hamburgers and they said that my pump wouldn't work. They give me 5 to choose from. Call summit back and 2 of the pumps are moroso that are not even made anymore. They have been replaced with new design. So then I called Moroso and asked they about it and they said that the two new pumps were structally the same as the old ones just different drive gears. And also said that there is no way they can say that the 2 pumps will work with that pan and pickup and maintain the 1/4 - 3/8 clearence, cause one is high volume and its about 1/2" longer anyway. So now I gotta buy a new pump and maybe a new pickup. :icon_mad:

Thanks X, but I have gave up on smooth just hoping for a little rocky. (no sudden drop-offs) lol. I have been calling around all day trying to find the pump I can use and nobody can get one before friday. Unless I drive an hour to a speed shop that has it on the shelf.
Well I finally talked some sence into the people at Hamburgers Performance. And they agreed to sending me a new pick-up, gasket set, and load seperators (which don't come with the pan). So I guess that helps. Now I just gotta get a new pump. Maybe summit will help me out there since there the ones that sold me all this as a kit. So I have an extra Moroso racing oil pump with a pickup welded on for a 9.5" deep pan if anybody needs one.
Talked to Summit again today. And they decided to exchange the pump for me. I told them the pick up had already been welded on. They said didn't madder I could try and take it off if I want or just leave it on. So they sent the new one out today with a recall pickup for the other one. My luck is getting better.
IT'S FINALLY IN!!!! My new oil pump, pickup, and gasket came in yesterday. Went home put it in and it doesn't hit. WHOO HOO. Gonna put the trans and converter in tonight. Then start hooking stuff up. The only thing that might stop me from firing it up this week will be if my balancer doesn't get here. You guessed it. Won't work. Tried to put it on before dropping the motor in and it only went on about 1/2" and stopped. Pulled it back off and measured it and it's about .01 smaller than the crank snout. Called Jegs and they said it probably didn't get machined right. DUH YOU THINK? I hate stupid people. Anyways they are gonna replace it. Only thing is that they won't ship the other one until they get this one back. :icon_mad: But at least I can get everything else ready.

looks good in there!
I dont know if you had a custom balancer made or what? But I think your supposed to have your machine shop hone the balancer to make it fit the crank, since your dealing with aftermarket parts. Atleast thats what I had to do.
Glad to see it between the fenders.I know its been an uphill battle but,YOU WIN!!haha

I've been through that a bunch. You would think after all these years, the parts companies would just about have the SBC figured out! I hate that crap! No wonder everyone wants a crate engine. I still like building 'em myself, though. Good luck SS!

Thanks Guys, got the tranny, converter, crossmember in, hooked up my shifter and trans brake, put the cooling lines on and started them to the front. Went to bolt on the starter and forgot that the 400 block doesn't have the straight bolt pattern. Bet you can't guess what style starter I have? Straight!! No biggie though, I made a jig that would bolt to the stagered bolt patteren with the line up hole to drill through for the straight. Wasn't to bad. Would have been alot easier out of the truck but I got it did. Believe it or not the starter even bolted right up. :D So other than the drive shaft I am done on the underside as far as I know. Should get my driveshaft back at the end of the week of first of next week. I sent it back to the company that built it to have it checked for straghtness and balance since the trans was in such bad shape from the motor explosion.

Just curious to see if you got your drive shaft back. I think we are all ready for a video. Good Luck.
Faron
Yes I got my driveshaft back. It's in and everything hooked up. Had a few minor electrical issues but think I got them straightened out. Gonna fire it up today. Break it in. There is a T&T wednesday night I might try and make it to. But that is my 5 year anniversary so it might not be a good idea. And we are going out of town next weekend so not sure when I will get to try it out.
A little update on my project: As most of you know I made a stupid mistake of not putting my oil pump drive rod in with the pump. So we pulled the engine, dropped the pan, pulled the pump put the pickup on put it all back together with a new gasket and stuffed it back in the truck. Poured the oil back in it tried to prime it. NO oil pressure to gauge. Start checking line from gauge back to block for clog. Clean as a whistle. So I try again. Still nothing to gauge or push rods. Thinking some passages in block might be clogged. Pulled the Wix filter. NO oil other than what I poured in it before installing it. Called the machine shop that did the block work the only thing he could think of is a plug under the rear main cap blocking the oil passage. So we pull it back out. Take the pan, pump, and #5 main off to find a plug under it flush with the block. It's supposed to be about 1-2 inches in the block. The whole is stepped. So we drive the plug out to find that the right one is in there as well. Make sure it's in the right place. Put it all back together, put it back in again. Try to prime and it does in about 30 seconds. 65lbs with battery drill. Get the rockers full, put everything back on and hooked up. Push it out the shop, hook up the charger, fill with water and water wetter, check water flow, and fans. Everthing is working. Pour some Torqo 114 in and go to prime the fuel system and the pressure goes to 6 lbs and then drops to 0, back to 3 then 0, over and over. So we start checking everthing and find that the 2 fuel filters and pump are clogged from gelled fuel from last year. By then I ran out of time. Had to go in to get ready to leave for my anniversary on friday. Send a Buddy to the speed shop to get new filters while gone. Get back Yesterday. Pull it all apart change the filters and clean the pump. Put it all back together and try again. Jumps right up to pressure and stays. Everthing is good. So we push it back out, hook up the charger, roll a heat buster in front of it for extra air flow for break in. Check everthing AGAIN. Finally decide it's ready for fire. Bump it over a few times with no plugs, put plugs and wires on. Now ready, Let it turn over bout 2 or 3 rotations, hit the ignition switch and believe it or not it STARTED. WHO HOO. And idled at around 900 barly. Turned idle up to around 1100, sounded great. Walk around front to find the front oil pan seal leaking bad. Shut it down. Now back to the war room. Gotta change the gasket. Tried to reuse one from the oil pump shaft change. Now I gotta find a gasket. Nobody has one that can ship before July 9. But atleast I got to hear it run.

ss did you use a one peice oil pan seal..
ss did you use a one peice oil pan seal..
No. Can't use a one piece on my oil pan.
Thanks Guys, It has been a uphill battle for me but I am not backing down. LOL I tried to patch the oil leak so that maybe I can do the breakin before I have to drain the oil. (again) I hope it will atleast slow it way down or stop it for a little while. I don't want to have to drain this oil, strain it, and pour it back in again. (that would make 3 times) Would rather drain it change the gasket and filler with VR1 and be done.
And Bakas as far a qiuck, I thought we did good to. But apparently my wife thought it could have been faster. :nono: But my buddy and I are almost pro's at pullin and stuffing my motor.
Well the patch job on the oil pan worked. I pulled the truck out and fired it up last night. Didn't leak. So I actually got to do the initial breakin last night. However the pan did start seeping a little about 5 mins before we were done but it wasn't bad. Gonna try and change the pan gasket tonight.
After the breakin I decided to wash and wax it. (hasn't been washed since painted in December) Cleans up real good!! But there was a down fall, went to put the hood back on for the first time since the motor has been in and the radiator cap hits and won't let it set all the way down. More modifiying I guess.
Ok I think I finally have it on the down slope! I got my oil pan gasket changed. It doesn't leak. Got my hood to fit with the radiator in its same spot. Hooked up my alternator and a few other odd and ends. Everything seems to be doing pretty good. Still need some carb adjusting and maybe play with the timing when I get to take it to the track. The next T&T is friday the 10th. :naughty: Not sure what time to expect out of it but hopfully it won't disapoint me. Gonna drive it some tomorrow. I may try and get a video if I can figure out how to post it here. LOL
