View Full Version : Mysterious oil leak

I had noticed I was getting a little oily spot (golf ball size) under my blazer coming directly under the inspection cover on the transmission after its been drove and sits for awhile. The engine is pretty fresh maybe 300-400 miles on it and always had this leak since I put it in. So last weekend I decided to pull the cover off and I couldn't really tell where it was leaking it had a light coat of oil on both sides oil filter and starter. I figured the crank was slinging it up and some how running out between the block and bell housing over time. So I guess it was the rear main because it was a little damp, I drooped the trans and put rear main seal and new oil pan gasket in. Got it back together last night and the damn thing still leaks but with the inspection cover not funneling it down it is coming from somewhere on the drivers side so I go looking some more and see a slight damp spot on top of block behind driver side of intake. I figure it most be running down from there but cant see real good above the filter. Put Intake gaskets on today and still leaking. It not a big leak but just driving me nuts and don't want it to drip at the track. The only other things it could be is head gasket or a sand hole in the block. Both unlikely. Any ideas guys

I cant believe you actually tore it down after seeing a little oil spot on the ground, dude your nuts. When you see a leak always start from the top and work your way to the bottom. It can be a number of different things. Mabey look at the valve covers, dipstick, oil filter, mabey even a pipe plug in the block. Try de-greasing the motor and wipe it down real good. Take it for a spin, warm up the motor, and start looking. Good luck.

check the gasket at the base of the distributor and oil press. sender,as a small leak at these locations could/would cause this condition. hope it's an easy fix.

this might sound crazy but I had a similar leak comming from the bottom of the flywheel cover. had two problems, one was the distrib gasket(fixed) and the other was the oil dipstick sleve was not seating right and was running back into the cover and somehow making it to the driverside looking like the leak came from there. Still don't have a clue how, just figured it had to be airflow in the engine compartment somehow.

I did start at the top first valve covers intake and stuff. But the way it slung it inside the cover it looked like it would be the rear main. I will check the dipstick tube though because mine is on the driver side so maybe that's it.

Rear main No don't think so. Rear main is a pressureized seal - when it running it would drip continuously. I would bet on the pan gasket. I put a spot of RTV on the corners like your supposed to and once it dried the crank would occasinly touch it and pulled it out enough to cause a wet spot where ever I parked it.

would it by any chance be coming from the oil sending unit in back of the intake?i doubt it but just an idea.sounds like you have covered everything else.good luck

I have seen a distributor leak. Not the gasket seal on the exterior, but from inside the distributor. The oil was coming from the center shaft for the rotor. It would leak down through the breather screen on the bottom of the distributor base and down the back of the engine.

Since it is a minimal leak I would look at non-pressurized oil possibilities first.

before I changed my heads I had a little leak to that looked like it came from the seal but it was coming from the oil sending unit, it wasn't screwed in good enough.
