Welcome to the site, I took the AC out and modified the box to fit the passenger valve cover access, it fit in there with the normal setup just tight, There are several people here thathave done the swap with AC, loss of HP of course and more strain on the cooling system are issues, where I live we don't really need AC. the heat is not even a issue, all of the heat components are out of the way.

No, you do not need to loose any of your heating or A/C. Below are pics of my 86 A/C housing modification and with LT1 installed.

In my 87 I have an 85 350 with tall steel valve covers and iron exhaust manifolds from an 81 305 GMC 1/2 ton similar to the Camaro manifolds and no modifications to the A/C box for clearance issues at all, it all depends on what model/year truck you have and what engine and exhaust combo you are trying to stuff in it, the heater is no problem on most any but with A/C the air boxes where made without a recess in the side on some earlier models and years, even if it had a recess some engine & exhaust combos still need additional clearance... I think the best way to have a V8 and keep your A/C is to put your radiator in the forward position (Corvette and others) so you have plenty of room for a big enough puller fan with a shroud and use one of the universal type A/C condensers up front, they go by the name 'multi-flow', 'parallel flow' and 'super flow'... The design of this condenser allows for smaller sizing with even higher efficiency than the old tube and fin design from the days of R12, it was designed to handle R134A and help stop a condition known as high head pressure that happens when you use R134A with a tube and fin design condenser, this can cut down on horsepower loss and improve the efficiency of the A/C also... A helper fan up front is also a good idea for sitting in traffic with A/C on and with mine I have a loppey idle so I plan to install a throttle stop solenoid that will raise my idle any time the A/C compressor comes on... A standard cab don't take much to cool anyway...

Can the evap box be removed, and keep the heat? I want the evap box out of there, but don't want to lose heat.

search ebay, craigslist or salvage yard for a non A/C heater box:

I kept my heat and air conditioning with ought modifications, the truck only came with a heater so there is a lot of space on the passenger side under the hood and i've got 5 windows with some holes in the floors (and i'm currently missing a drivers side door) instead of a compressor! I think it works out well...

i had a 87 that was an ac truck i took the ac part out of the box and the heater worked the same even though there was 1 or 2 holes coming out of the box and i didnt have to modifie the box at all and you can put a stock heater box on the under the hood side i did it to mine it worked better then the ac box in there. hope this helps ya out some.
