I have a 88 S10 with low mileage 350 crate motor. Im lookin for a cheap way to lock the rear end up. I drive it on the street, but not as a daily driver, and it will see time at the drag strip.

I see the spools, and there pretty cheap they label them street/strip but then say recommended for dirt, and off road use.

What do you think???

A spool is no intended for use on the street. The spool will lock the rear completely. When you make a turn, the inside tire will drag along. You will wear the tires out faster and put extra strain on the rear components, The cheap easy is a G80 gov loc available from a junk yard. The sell on Ebay for about 150 but are cheaper if you pull them yourself at the junk yard.

Remember with the 88, you have 26 spline axles and need one from 88 and older.

I have a Auburn Full Spool in my 9" Ford rearend in my 89 S10. You have to be careful selecting one as you know, there are some not made for drag racing. Look at Aurburn's website or eBay (where I got mine) for one made for drag racing.

a 9 in ford comes in either a semi floating or full floating rear end and it is also light years stronger than what comes in a s-truck stock. Melonhead is right a full spool yes cheaper but it will lock up around corners rather your on the gas or not (chirp/wheel hop). A locker will allow one wheel to spin as long as your not on the gas then it acts just like a spool. A spool is very hard on components especially on a c-clip axle for street use. It depends on what you call street use but I consider it more than a few 3000's miles a year. A stock gov loc is the way to go for easy operation and price, after market lockers tend to click as they ratchet going around corners which can be very annoying. If you where running some serious power I would switch rear ends and go with the spool other wise stick with a locker or limited slip you will be alot happier. (my two cents)
