My pal welded up my stock diff with the stock 3.73s. I put the shims back in the same way they came out same with the bearing caps, but I had to grind a little off of the pin that pushes the axles agaist the c clips because the drivers side axle shaft was too tight against the pin. The problem I am having now is the drivers side rear wheel is a lil sloppy when I grab it and shake it when i have the rear jacked up off the ground. Any ideas guys?

slop forward to rear/up and down or in and out? if it is forward to rear/up and down get a outter bearing repair kit that changes the surface the axle rides on cost about $50 plus fluids.

It is forward to rear , up and down. Plus since it has been sitting on jack stands I noticed a oil stain growing underneath loose side. So axle seals and a outer bearings ? Do the bearings come out fairly easy or do I need a puller or torch?

the bearings are not fun to get out ..usely its a bad axle...the needs to be cut out slide hammer might work but i don't think it will ..i tryed it ...use a good die grinder to cut the bearout out ..the rollers come out easy the cup or race is the trickey part..

Agree, if there slop in the all around chance are the sxel shaft is worn. A new bering won't fix a bad shaft. However, A 3 jaw puller would work to remove the bearing. advance auto rents the tool to remove them. It is a slide hammer with a "T" tip on the end. If pivots s it will slide through the center of the bearing.'

I agree a slide hammer is the tool of choice. :headbang:

I have another 2 wheel drive 1st gen s10 at my shop with the 2.8, auto trans. As long as the splines are the same and the axle is in good shape I can swap in a used axle shaft right? My truck came with 3.73s and I want to keep em.

depending on what kind of power you are pushing they have a bearing repair kit that is a bearing and seal that changes the surface the bearing rides on, if you look at the shaft you can see the primary surface, then there is a dip and a machined surface past the dip toward the outer portion of the shaft, the bearing repair kit rides on that surface. Here is the part number, what you have to do is pull the old bearing out, lubricate the o ring and press the bearing repair kit in, I have been running one on WNY roads and have had absolutely no problems.

The easiest way is to weld them out. If you need to get that bearing out and it will not come very easily with a slide hammer you can weld them out. if anyone has welded bearing races out you will know what i am talking about. On my truck the outer bearings have 8-10 roller bearings in it. You can knock the rollers and the case out with a large hammer and a punch. The only thing that will re-main will be the outer case of the bearing (race) You can then weld a small bead around that race. Let it cool and it will either fall out, or break in half. It will be tricky getting in there with a welder but can be done.
