A 700R4 must be used with a lock up type torque converter and if you don't hook up the electrical circuits for lockup (overdrive) you will just have a four speed...
I guess one of these two things I mention above is what your talking about when you say: install a lock up thing? A thingy or thing-a-mabob in my book... LOL :icon_lol:
Lockup is not a hard thing to get wired up and there are many kits available on the market to do this with detailed instructions, it would be a good idea to hook it up if this is going to be a street machine, for fuel economy reasons, specially if it's a V8 conversion running on a carburetor and the ECM removed that used to control lock up... It can be as simple as a wire and a switch if you want to manually control it, but I would not recommend this without using power feed coming from a normally closed brake pedal switch to disengage lockup when you hit the brakes...
I also have In the system I'm using a fourth gear switch that will only let it go into overdrive in 4th gear and a high vacuum switch and vacuum delay valve connected to manifold vacuum that acts like a kick down from overdrive (converter lockup) to 4th or 3rd if you open the throttle, it also protects the lockup clutch from trying to engage under heavy acceleration because the switch will open when the vacuum drops and will close when it stabilizes at a higher vacuum closing the switch and engaging lock, the vacuum valve system can also stop the problem of continuous engage and disengage of lockup on steep hills pulling a trailer with the right vacuum valve setting, there is an adjustable one available for this...
It's just old school stuff like what was used on the early 700R4 equipped vehicles in the 80's...
Well, I think I wrote a bit more than needed on this now, Bye Bye... :icon_wave:
