Check your grounds--- and cables to be sure they are on the right posts.

The above,
and check THAT ( the smoking) connection.

Update: I should have mentioned that under high loads, a bad connection can smoke, particularly is there is some oil or some other crap on the terminal that inhibits conductivity. The smoke is the oil or whatever, burning off.
Oil or grease on top of the connection can help protect against corrosion, but oil or grease on the post BEFORE the clamp is tightened isn't good, and can tend to be an insulator.

also low voltage creates high amps. high amps create heat. make shure there is enough voltage aswellas enough cca in your batt that is assuming that starter is not dragging or binding up. also check all connections voltage jumps and vibrates if connections are not tight and good it could cause heat, sparks and fires. none of us want that for anyone.

Check the wire that runs from your ingition to your starter.. I drove my truck to work the other day and went to leave for lunch and nothing.. not even a click when i hit the key.. got out and looked everything checked out and still nothing.. I had a guy come over and hit the key a few times so i could tap on the starter with a wrench and noticed that the 2 wires running to the the alternator with the fuseable links were smoking!?!!? so I said stop!! and took a look at everthing and then remembered back when I test drove my camaro after an engine swap it killed out on my and i found that the wire that run to my starter was burned and touching my header and shorting out! and it shut everying down.. anyways after that i looked and the Damn wire was in between my tranny dipstick tube and the passenger side head.. burned right through it.. I pulled the wire away and taped it up (temp fix) hit the key and fired right up.. I bet thats your problem

I noticed that you said it was turning over.. so maybe not
