Whats up! I just giving a warning to those replacing a oil pan pick-up on a Gen III. The end that bolts to the oil pump has a 6mm bolt that holds down the tube. The bolt can BREAK!!!! Yeah, I found that out the hard way!
I just bought the LS1 oil pan from the parts store. I torqued the bolt to 18 ft lbs. Like the tech book said, and SNAP! I read everything that I could get my hands on before doing this. The other hardware, like head bolts, main bolts ARE NOT TO BE USED AGAIN! One timers! But I didn't read anywhere, that this little 6mm bolt COULD not be reused! I just bought a New torque wrench last Sunday at Sears! They tested it today, so thats not the problem.
So Im telling you guys! BUY A NEW BOLT! Talk about piss a guy off! A $5 dollar bolt, could have saved the day! :icon_mad:
Might be good Idea to have that bolt in the box when someone buys the kit! Had everything else, but that bolt!
Dont know if I can get the bolt out with easyout. Dammit! Hate to get something in the motor!
Thought Id let you all know about this! I spoke to my brother-inlaw that works at a GM dealer. He said that he never had one break, but know a guy that did. I told him, " you now know 2 guys!":o

That sucks, Hope you get it out
Thats a shame.I know it would be uncomfortable, but if you have it on an engine stand, spin the motor right side up if you have to drill the bolt if youre worried about gettin crap in there. If you do, wear eye protection.

I hope so too! Thought about that Xten. Might go to the local tool store in the morning, find out if they have a left hand drill bit. And a good ezy out. This sucks!
Thats my luck! Still cant see why the dam thing snaped off in the first place!
I really made sure the bolt hole was clean and blown out before I threaded it.
Hmm.. Well like anything I do, Its a F@#King adventure! LOL:D
I'll let you guys know how turns out!
Thanks!

I was going to mention the left hand bit myself.
But first, try unscrewing it by tapping with tiny chisel or center punch. As long as the bolt wasn't bottomed out or anything, there should be almost on tension on it, and it may walk right out easier than you'd expect.
And with the left hand bit, you'd hope the bolt would just screw right out as soon as you got started with the hole! Either way, that'd be good news.
And thanks for the heads-up on the bolt problem!

Thanks Scotty! I'll cross my fingers that the bolt comes out w/o drillin it. I bought 4 different size's of lefthand bits today.
Have to try it tonite, working today. I'll try the chisel trick, only problem is the build book said to locktite it!

If you have loctite on it, heat it just a little with a mini torch. Like a crack pipe torch. No I'm not a crack head!!! LOL Get it hot enough to melt the loctite. Then take a prick punch or center punch and position it way off center of the bolt....but not on the immediate edge. After spotting it, angle the puch in a counter clockwise direction and keep tapping it. Usually they will come out. If not, center punch it in the DEAD CENTER and drill with a left handed drill, first try spinning it slowly. Allot of times it will twist right out.
I have done both of these countless times. But you are better off doing the center punch thing first if it will work. I have removed many brocken bolts from molds and dies over the past 15 years. Just hold your mouth a certain way (you have to make a concentrating face) and all should be well.

I didn't think you where Stroke! Thanks for suggestion! Thought that would work if I heat it up just enough. Im more clear headed today, yesterday I could have bit a nail in half! LOL! " Settle down BEAVIS! You'll ruin it!"
Thanks guys
Justin

That's a TON of wisdom. BigMean has the "control" to know when to give it all a cooling off period. A whole lot easier said than done though!

The bolt that secures the oil pickup to oil pump is only torqued to 106 in-lbs.
