well im gonna tear down the top end of my motor, pull out the bottom end and a close fried of my dad is gonna go over my bottom end. we are praying for an easy puff hone and ring replacement. if i need to bore it bigger than i dont think im gonna go thru with it cause that will just end up being a ton of money in pistons and all. he is gonan do all the labor for free!!! dad and i saw the guy who originally built my motor and we had it out with him, there is actually a few people who are having some issues with him right now so we just said our peace and walked away. in the process of taking the bottom end apart if all lookes good for just rings we are gonna see if going back to a roller cam will improve me in any way. if not then just the rings and back together, then tackle the rear with a richmond or moser 488 ring and pinon.

There is no time in which a roller tappet cam would not be beneficial. Just depends on how light ya want to get in the pockets.

well tell me what do you guys think? in my old 355 before my 406 i have a 600 roller, then when we built my 406 for whatever reason i was told i couldnt use that cam and was traded for a 571 flat tappet solid lift. so now my dads friend is sayin if its beneficial maybe go back to a roller cam. he cant imagine why the roller woulnt have worked and thinks trhe guy skeemed on me to get the roller for himself. but dads friend wants to pull this all apart and check it all out. dads friends name is chip just so its easier..haha..chip is a 62 yr old guy who has been racing and building engines since he was 16, used to have his own shop in brooklyn back in the day with some other guys, and has a destroked 283 down to 277 motor in a 88 camaro that runs in the 8's. its a freaking intense looking car and revs like crazy...so i def have some trust in this guy

BigNate, you never heard of a 377? That is the 400 sbc with a 350 crank. Yes, very rev happy and plenty of power on top.

302 chevy motor !!!! 350 block with 283 crank. Talk about some HIGH rpms!!! They sceam!!!!!
Oth- Glad to hear that your getting the motor worked out. As for the roller issue the only reason I could assume that the guy told you no on the roller was because he thought you needed a small base circle cam. No sure if a roller is avalible in small base or not. Since your 'new' guy is an experianced bulider, he should be able to check if it could work or not. While its apart you could clearnce it for a crank scraper. Maybe pick up a hp or 2.

The only thing I can think of is if it were a hydraulic roller. I think you have to have machine work to run a hyd roller in a 400 block cause they didnt come factory with them. You have to have the spider thing to bolt in your lifter valley to hold the lifters down.
As for the small base you can get them in roller. Not all but most. Just cost little more.

melon i didnt say 377,haha i said 277, this thing screams like a banshee. he also as that 2 lever automatic trans where u pull 1 lever for 1st then pull the other lever for 2nd, and it also has a clutch, so off the line he uses a lin lock with the clutch engaged, lite goes green he pops the clutch at like 11grand, haha insane

ok so heres and update and its not a good update at all. i also have a pic to show.
ok so now back in march i had my heads redone, milled new valves all that crap. now at the time i built this motor we were under the impression i was about 11.1-11.5 compression. on the street i did use 93 octane without a problem, especially since it wasnt alot, mostly 100-100 octane though. now after this head rebuild im guessing the milling caused the compression to go up? is that possible? i went to the track rite after that and used 110. has some extra also. a week ago when all this shit took place i had used up the last of my 110 octane, and went for a cruise. too far from home, and no track local to get race fuel i had to put in a few gallons of 93 octane. figured it wouldnt hurt since i used to do it anyway. drove home lioke normal, took it out followin day drove around, got on it some wut and this is when the shit hit the fan with the puffing of smoke.
so now today i got off work at 8am and went straight to my garage and started ripping apart my motor. by 11am. after cleain up garage n then startin on motor my dad came by. at this time i had all fluids drained, water pump, alternator, distributor, headers, intake off the engine. so now both of us tackled the heads. once i popped off the driver side head, my dad was like OH SHIT!!! the 4 cylinders were slightly brown and then he looked at #7 and DAMN. the upper outter edge of the piston was melted and gone( pic below). detonated a piston and 2 of the cylinder walls are scratched up. we went on forward pulled of passenger side, totally perfect not a problem at all.. went on to pull the short block out of the truck, left the trans in, rolled the truck back in the garage. put the engine in back of dads cherokee and gonna bring it to his friend chip tomorrow so he can break it all down and here whats in store.
if i can puff hone, i will prob do it. if i need to do major entesive work like bore it .040 i think im gonna have to pass. i cant swing that kind of money. and idea i had (joke) is put the perfect running 1962 pontiac tempest 4 cylinder engine we have in the blazer. hey its 1/2 of a 389...lol.. below is the detonated piston, and pics of the 1962 pontiac tempest 4cylinder...haha
