I have an 84 S10 pickup extended cab with 283 Shaker motorsports built motor. Definetly will rip up the pavement but only under one wheel. Tis a shame. I would like to put posi in it and wonder if it would be best to build on the stock rear I have or is there just a bolt up and go rear from the scrap yard that would fit the bill. I have been told anything from mustang to camaros blah, blah, blah, can anyone tell me for sure. Thanks, Pat

with a 283 i doubt your putting down enough torque to break the 7.5 rear end. i say keep it. the only direct bolt in would be an 8.5 from a newer s10 truck or blazer 95-04 that came with a 4.3 and 5 speed. i would just throw in a posi unit and be done with it. if you want to go that route PM me i have what you need at a real fair price.

I would stay away from the gov-lock style. I have one and as soon as I get the time and money, im swapping for a different style.

In all honesty, why bother with a rearend you will have issues with eventually? The better solution is an 8.8 for several reasons, plentifull,3.55,3.73 and 4.10 gears available with a good locker in there ready to go from an Explorer 100-300...

If you decide you do not want a ford part in your build you can always get a 8.5" rear from a 73-81 F-body move the spring pearches in 1/2"...reason why i speak about the earlier 8.5 is because they are stronger than the new style.

How's this for size? I have a friend "HARD HEADED" as all hell! He built his 10-bolt up for his 99 Z28, new locker, moser axles, new 4.10s,rear brace cover spent roughly 1300.00 on this aleged "BULLET PROOF" ASSembly.......He ran this thing for 2 weeks like this. As far as i was concerned all he did is pull the pin on a grenade! Sure enough he launched that car,it went a whopping 5 feet, teeth on the ring and pinion broke, wedged into the locker and broke the case, chewed the splines on both axles........of course me being the supportive friend i am i told him, "for 600.00 bucks more you would still be racing tonight had you have bought a Moser 12bolt" yeah i know a lil salt in a wound sux

all depends on the OP's intent with the truck. From what it sounds like, he will not need a larger rearend. So no point in spending the extra money. True, 8.8s arent that expensive, but there is the hassle of install, plus getting wheels that dont stick out. Odds are the 7.5 will be fine unless he starts doing suspension work and runs sticky tires. Or tries to launch it hard. Sticking with the 7.5 and putting in a $100 posi isnt that bad of an idea. Was your friend running a 3rd or 4th gen camaro? I know a guy that replaced his gears 3 times! Thats on a basically stock LT1 camaro. He loves hard launches with 4.10s. But the idiot still hasnt figured out that it wont take the abuse. He could have an aftermarket 12 bolt in it for almost what he has in replacement parts and installation.

I hear you Brad. Looking to pinch Pennys and it cost more in the long run. I agree that this man does not NEED another rear end. If it gets wiped out, put something better in then. Don't waste the time and effort to beef it up, knowing in the back your wind it will blow later. This of course is two different spectrums. Just helping to get the point across.

those 7.5s are stronger then most people think. even built with the right parts anything can break. the point is if its a street car and almost never sees a drag strip then whats the point in going to an 8.8 or even a custom built 10 bolt or 9"? just swap in a good Zexel or Arburn with a quality set of gears and you will be fine.

I have to agree. THat stocker rear is stronger than most think it is - especially for a street only truck. I have had mine together for long time. I blew up 1 rear but that was my fault. I Lincoln Lockered the rear and the weld broke wedged in the teeth and took of a tooth. If I didn't weld the rear then it wouldn't have broken. Well actually if I wasn't doing donuts and hit the blacktop with 1 wheel then it would not have broke. Anyways the 7.5 replacement rear has been in thier for years. It has a gov-lock carrier in it. I wouldn't suggest one cause they are prone to breaking. A clutch style posi unit like the aburn is the best bet.

I already have 4:11 ring and pinion and all the seals and bearings to put in. I think all thats missing is a carrier. Does anyone have one laying around that they are looking to get rid of. It will need to go into a stock 84 rear. Thanks Pat. opticial@aol.com. I am in La Porte Indiana.

That's a very vague question. If the donor is the same drive as the truck you're working on then it's bolt on. In the future it's better to start a new post if you want an answer.
