Can anyone tell me for sure if a '98 2.2L engine will work in a '96 that also had the 2.2L. My mechanic brother told me to make sure that they both used the same crankshaft and crankshaft sensor. According to O'Reilly's they both used the same sensor if it is a two wire on the '96, but the '96 rebuilt crank says "Ignition wheel notches are 1/2" away from casting line" the '98 says "wheel notches line up with casting line". My brother then said from that information, He is not sure if that is a compatibilty problem or just a sensor location description.
Thanks in advance for anyones help. And if anyone has a Hollander interchenge book, could you look it up for me?

No it will not work they made some changes and it will be easier if you read this http://www.mys10.com/showthread.php?t=12687

I got this from a different s10 website. I think you will find your answers here.

Thanks for the help and advice. skat, I sent you a pm, and sassy, it appears that the biggest problem is with the location of the timing notches cut into the crank. if I knew what I was doing and had the computer for the '98, I am sure it could be done (after all, no service manual tells you that you can put a v8 in an s10 either) but the engine I found had a manual behind it and mine is an automatic, so that computer wouldn't work either, and the wiring is a lot different between the two years also. I guess I was hoping to find something that was just plug and play!
As I am saying all of this I am wondering, so if I had the complete engine from the '98 and bought a pcm for a '98 2.2L automatic, would it just be a matter of splicing some wires on the 'inlet' side of the pcm?

Glad I could help. But I do not think I can help with your last question. Sorry I am not a wiring expert (or novice) for that matter.
I do think that article said a motor from a 96 or 97 can be interchanged.

Good luck Steven
