I got my truck running today but there are some problems. Me and ChevyKid took it down the street and back and the passenger side header was glowing red hot and now one it warms up it wont runs worht a damn. When the 327 blew it bent one pushrod just slightly and when we took it for a drive i nailed it to pass a car and it ran good till I totally pinned it . I think I bent that pushrod more or even bent some more cause I try to step on the gas and it just falls on its face. The cam is a crower cam which number is 00201 and I have a gear drive off of ebay on there. The cam gear wouldn\'t sit on the cam right unless I put the #6 bushing in it which I think is wrong now. I think I\'m just gonna get a good double roller timing set and a new set of pushrods for it and hope that it will run better. What do you guys thinkmight be wrong? Please any input would be greatly apprciated
Thanks guys

i think its a bunch of things...first off those bushings are for degreeing the cam. If its not degreed then your cam timing is way off.

that is the only bushing that would let the cam gear sit on the cam gear right. I tried all the other bushings and the cam gear would just wobble like a bent wheel would. I didn\'t understand it. It is just frustrating cause I want it to run and it does but runs like dog sh*t. I think I\'m just gonna get a timing chain and put on it and a new set of pushrods and hope that it wi run alot better.
get ya just a good chain and be done with it. if you think you have pushrods bent then replace them also and check to make sure you didnt mess up a rocker arm or pull a stud if you have press in studs.

with some of the gear drives, there has to be some machining of the block, that might be part of the problem. And like the other dude said your cam is now advanced or retarded. Chain it and be done.
I would just replace all the pushrods, there cheap and easy to do.

When the headers glow red it is usually an indication that the timing is low. The gear drive set up is not worth the money. They have been known to cause harmonics problems that lead to things like valve float. A quality true double roller will work much better. Usually, cams are within about 4 degrees of where they are supposed to be. If your cam was off (say 3 degrees retarded) and you added 6 degrees of retard with the bushing, you could\'ve really gotten things out of wack. Make sure you check your ignition timing and all of your valve train parts. Good luck.

yeah the gear drive is off of ebay. I think I\'ll just get a new set of pushrods and a new timing set and be done with it. thanks guys for all the help
you didn\'t kiss any pistons with valves with all this pushrod bending you got going on did you?

Bent exhaust valves?

why would you reuse a bent pushrod http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

it was slightly bent but it could have been ran. I puyt a double roller chain on that TwiztedMods had cause I didn\'t lock down my cam bolts with the lock plate provided. I think I may have bent a valve again but I\'m gonna wait til I have new pushrods and have the heads looked at to make sure. I\'m gonna do a compression test tomorrow and see how it comes out. but i ruined the gear drive that I just bought which sucks. It runs pretty good but one cylinder is low or dead on compression with a bent valve cause you can hear it through the carb. I\'ll keep you guys posted.

i melted a head gasket between cylinders when i was 17 , from to much timing . the deadly knock.

you may wanna check the oil pan to make sure theres no metal from the gear drive in there.

Two things, which you probably arleady know now....
1) Never install a cam without checking the precise registration (alignment) with regards to TDC. Especially a high lift, long duration cam. The valves come scary close to touching the pistions when it is installed properly. 10 degrees one way or the other could spell disaster.
2) Never use a bent pushrod, however slightly it was bent. It will just bend again. Also, if a pushrod is bent, there is always a reason, and means that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. But it originally bent on the \"old\" engine, right?

yeah it was bent when I blew the 327 up and i didn\'t see it or even think about it until I was building the 350. but I\'m gonna run a compression test today and se how it goes.

#7 cylinder has hardly any compression so I\'m just gonna pull heads and redo them again and probably put on a set of springs. and install a new set of pushrods. even with 7 cylinders it flys. gotta love my truck even if it isn\'t running right but I guess that is my fault. I forgot to bend the tabs over the cam bolts and the cam bolts walked out on me but now I\'ve learned my lesson. But I\'m not gonna run another gear drive anyway so I\'m not worried about it even though I will always check for it from now on.

started it up today and let it run and after it warmed up the oil pressure took a shit down to like 10-15 psi.this sucks A$$ I think I\'m gonna go buy a mtor from a friend that just needs a cam put in it and run it til I get the good one built right or fixed. He pulled it out cause it had or he thought it had a flat cam. Only wants $150 bucks for it and it is complete and runs. Put a cam in it and go for now I wanna have some fun in my truck damn it. Also the motor is a 4 bolt main too

The engine that ate a cam could have quite a bit of metal in it. You might want to reconsider. You know that you are going to have to buy gaskets and a cam with lifters. Why don\'t you just use that money to help fix the motor you already have.
If you took the money you spent patching 2 motors and spent it on building one the right way, you would actually save money and have a good motor. Buy quality parts and do the job right. If you don\'t have the money now, just wait until you do. You have plenty of time, unless you\'re my age. This is the same speech that I give to my costumers and they just don\'t seem to get it. Good luck.
