Allright here\'s the issue. I put a mini starter on and it would not release from the flywheel even with .125 in shims so I then bought a Chevrolet mini style gear reduction one and it is doing the same. I have tried both straight and offset patterns. My block is a 3970010(69-79 4 bolt) and a 168 tooth flywheel. Has any one else seen this and what is the max # of shim thickness that can be used. Any responses welcome. I am trying to get this thing on the road!!!!!

are you using the right set of holes for the starter?....are they for both 153 and 168?.

The GM replacement one ony has 1 set of holes ad on the aftermarket one I used the hole which brought it the furthest from the flywheel.

have you tried a stock type starter to see what it does..try that or you could just try more shims........hope this may help you some

I went up tp the parts store and measured from the mounting surface to the center of the starter gear and they are the same. The only other thing I can think of is it possibly because the engine is free wheeling with no compression??? I still don\'t have the plugs or anything in yet because I need to put the starter on before I can put my long tube headers on. Hopefully someone out there has had the same issue and figured it out. I\'ve been building it for months, I want to drive it!

Thanks so far!!

What exactly is it doing? Is it making a clicking sound like the starter teeth are skipping on the flywheel teeth? Im having this same problem. I\'ve got the small 153 tooth flexplate. I\'ve tried at least 4 different starters now. I took the solenoid off the starter I tried yesterday so I could work the gear back and forth. It looked to be meshing fine. But when I hooked it all back up again, same thing. Is there some kind of anti-theft system on a \'96 that sends pulses to the starter? I dont know what else to try except for milling some off the starter mounting points to get it closer to the flexplate. When we first got the engine in, it rolled great for probably 5mins., then all of sudden it starts doing this crap. Another weird thing I noticed is that when I push the clutch in and hit the brake at the same time, the key wont work. As soon as I let out on the brake, I have power again. Good luck Tom and please email me if ya figure it out. I\'ll do the same for you.

you need to shim it back not down. most after market mini starters have a CNC block in the fron instead of an actual nose. and you can take that nose off and shim it from the starter. allowing the mounting spot to remain the same but the gear in the starter moves back. i had the same problem so i shimmed mine. it still rubs while the motor is running but its not constant just hit and miss so i need to shim it a little more. if none of your starters do this then you will need to get one that does. that will be the only way to fix it.

Well the OEM mini replacement I have on there now does have the snout so I will look at it and see if I can shim it at all. Hopefully I will have some time over the next week or so to try and fire it off and ind out. Thanks,

are you sure you dont have the flywheel on backwards?i have probably changed 100 different chevrolet v-8 starters and have only had one with problems and the pad where it bolted up was machined wrong and some washers under the starter fixed it

No the flywheel is on the right way. I have already ensured that. And believe me it is driving me crazy because I have also changed a million Chevy starters and have never had a problem such as this. Now then again the average is, pull a starter off put one on and roll. This time since everything was new and I am trying to set it all right the 1st time I am probably looking to far into it. What I am thinking is just put 1 shim (.064) in and keep getting the truck ready to start and see what happens. Hopefully with compression etc it will be fine. I hate being so particular about these issues and it\'s driving me crazy! If I never would have checked it I would have never had an issue. Thanks,

if you dont have any plugs in it and its just free wheelin, most of the time the starter will hang. one time i also was trying to start a new motor and i had it to far retarded and the starter was hangin. once i advanced it, the hang went away.....

Yeah hopefully that is what the issue is and I\'ll get it just right when it starts. Appreciate the replies.

I just spent two days and got mine to work!!! Shim only the inside bolt i USED 1 WASHER AND ONE SHIM AND i SMOTHED UP THE TEETH ON THE STARTER WITH JUST SOME FINE SANDPAPER.

By doing this the starter rotates away from the flywheel and gives you a little more clearance! good luck!
