Mostly Ricers, but a few \"killer cars\" participated. (past tense?) http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif As I understand it, some huge sums of $$ have been won and lost at these races.......

That mayor is brilliant! I guess he was thinking of the US Nationals, and just said Indy 500. What a dope.
I wish, just once, the press would give hot rodders some positive ink. we do a lot of good (give to charities, help stranded motorists, etc.)
Guess that isn\'t news worthy.
Oh, and yes, i have street raced, it is stupid (especially one this big, duh!) but it happens. There are lots worse things going on, i am sure.

Heh heh.... yeah, I couldn\'t believe he said Indy 500 either. Talk about \"out of the loop\". http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
.......... I guess large, semi-organized street racing is a urban/metorpolitan area thing, I know it\'s big in NYC/metro, LA.... probably Chicago & Detroit.... You certainly wouldn\'t ever see me around those \"events\". But I will say, the \"jive-talkin\'\" guys who lurk around Englishtown Raceway Park have begged me to show up, so they could make a big $$ betting on my truck, because it looks so stock.
.............. And once during time runs, I raced another sleeper, it was awesome fast, like a 9 second car.... he had N/T (no time) on his window, meaning that our times would not be displayed on the board. Well, I no sooner get back to the lanes, and some brother is waving money at me, willing to pay me to see my time slip, so he could know what the other guy ran! Apparently the car I ran was one he was planning on betting against in an upcoming street race. So I let him peek. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Racing there has been going on since the late 60\'s. The baddest cars, the biggest bets, and the violence at times that goes along with all of the above. It was always known as \"behind the airport\" and meant put up or shut up. The NYC guys would meet the Paterson guys on a Friday night and big money and cars would trade hands. Recently the ricer crowd has made it too big for the cops to ignore.

I spoke to someone today who said that the raid was probably done on \"ricer\" night, I guess that\'s Friday night. He said that the \"big guns\" probably gather on a different night to avoid the \"masses\".
......... It was also mentioned, that some of the nastiest pieces of detroit iron that run there are owned by guys who are \"on the job\". http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Racing will always be the greatest pastime as long as there is something to race. Wheater it be cars trucks bikes or even byclyes. I used to s****t race. Won lots of cash, and lost some too! Stopped once the ricers started to multiply. The cops would come and you would have to go to your agreed meeting place - to collect or pay. Sometimes, It was more of a thrill to race the cops!!! Now, I race roundy round. I found that its cheaper and alot safer.

yeah street racing has been around forever its just become more of a publicized problem lately. i guess because of the growing numbers, but i can tell you that the SS Camaros and GTO\'s and Firebirds that my dad and friends raced back in the day were a hell of a lot quicker and more dangerous than these front wheel drive econo-boxes i compete with now-days. its mostly these idiots that race in traffic, run over people, etc. that gets the negative attention.

lol. money makes it harder to back out tho. i think money might be a big reason why ppl run into other cars and stuff. i do like money, and i will own a low 13 sec s10.

I have to admit that I did ( http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif ) my fair share of street racing in the early to mid seventies back when i lived in Denver. You would go downtown to 15th and 16th street to cruise. These were one way streets with a two lane bridge a half mile lone on each. Get to the top and stand on it. only two cars at a time. The cops didn\'t like it but it made it easy to get away. LOL You\'d then cruise up to the Scitchman drive in to see what kind of cars were up there. Let me tell you, blowers and tunnel rammed big blocks of all sorts were there. The place to go racing from there was Thunder Road. WAY out in the boonies. Usally only a select few would even know about the race.
Street racing wasn\'t any safer back then, it\'s just we would take it outside of town or do it where only two cars were involved, not a piss pot full were.
I do beleive if cities want to stop street racing theyshould provide a place to do it. Not cheap, but a thought. okay, I\'ll step down.
