I am in the process of hooking up my 2nd stage of nitrous and I was trying to make the second stage operate only when the first stage is on, for safety reasons. This also means that when the first stage is off (when the WOT switch is off) I want the second stage to cut off. I tried to do this with a relay (85-86-87-30).

I have the first stage of nitrous hooked onto the 86-85 prongs closing the ground part of the 1st stage nitrous circuit. When I flip the WOT switch on, nothing happens (no nitrous solenoids work, but my retard box does not see ground any more since timing is taken out) . If I take the relay out and straight wire the first stage to ground the first stage works fine.

My question is: how much power (amps) does this (85 86 87-30) relay need to operate? Is that my problem? Have you used a relay like this before with other solenoids or other electrical devices in the same circuit? ALL INPUTS ARE APPRECIATED!

PS: I do have an RPM activated switch as plan B, but I would like to make this work , or at least understand why it does not work as is. Thanks ahead

Sorry, It doesn\'t seem that anyone has enough knowledge in this area inorder to help you out.

Could you try Jegs or Summit, sometimes they have knoledgeable people working the phones. Just speak and listen cautiously, you don\'t want to get locked into buying something you already have.

Space.

generally the relays will work on as little as 6-7 volts. you can do the relaY activation, but nothing is safer or better than a button on the shifter (or 2 ). much less hassle plus if your tires spin because of the nitrous hit, would you rather let out of everything, or let off the button and still have the engine power to maybe win the race?

how late do you want your second stage to come in? The easiest thing to so would be to leave your RPM switch to activate only the first stage. Wire the relay with your ground,(Pin 85) battery power(Pin 30), and run the wire to the soleniods(Pin 87). Use the WOT switch to supply the + power to make the relay click (Pin 86) , Wire the other end of the WOT switch to an actual switch in the truck so when your not using the nitrous and you mash it the soleniods dont open. Run the wire from the switch to the battery. Run the other wire from the soleniods to the ground. I would not use the ground side to make the work the relay. This is how i have mine wired. For your second stage i would run a wire from Pin 87 on the first relay to Pin 86 on a second relay. Run your soleniods from Pin 87 on the second relay and ground the other wires. ground the relay(Pin 85) The put a button on your shifter. Run the one end to + battery side. Wire the other side to pin 30 on the relay. If you can picture it then When you turn on the switch you arm both systems. First stage will be controlled by the RPM switch. When the RPM switch is closed and the first stage is active you can use the second stage. As soon as you let of the gas and the RPM switch is disengaged it will kill both systems. They will both be controlled by the RPM switch but the button on the shifter will be used to engage the second stage. If You did not have the button on the shifter then when the RPM switch was engaged it would spray both stages. The button will control when you activate the second stage. Let me know if you understand this if not i can try to draw it up for you.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I cannot run a relay in the same circuit as the solenoids, so that is why I had to ask.

I think that I have a solution now. I can hook up 2 relays side by side with the WOT supplying the 12V for the 85 86 pins of both. In the second relay\'s 85 86 circuit I put a switch. Then I can switch on the system witht his switch. Thanks for the advice of checking with tech support, that is where I got the idea.

why you using the ground (pin85) for power? Its the best if you can use all you 12v positive for power and hook all your negatives to a good solid ground.

I made a box for all this from a project box. I have the 12V and the ground all ready. I just had to come up with the design, before I started. I was wondering if the polarity of the voltage through 85 86 matters? Thanks
