would like to hear from any of yuo that has a 305 engine and are enjoying it. I have one that runs good but not getting the thrill i had hoped for and since it runs good i would hate to pull it out

So you have a 305 in your truck and its not as great as you thought huh?? Bummer....

Gotta remember though, most 305s were about 140-160hp and most 4.3Ls(262ci) were typically 180-195hp.

Good news is, you can build a better V8 shortblock and throw it in in a day and have all kinds of fun!!

as something of a rebuttal - most large car and truck 350s werent too far above 200 horsepower either

the 305 is no powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination. you can make good power out of it though and the bore : stroke ratio is good for torque. slap a set of vortec heads on it along with a performer intake and if you really have no money then get the cam out of even a stock 350 (L05).

youll see an improvement with the cam alone. when i was in school we dynoed a 305 for this guy. the thing put out 297 horse and damned near 400 ft/lbs of torque with all factory parts. stout little bastard for a 305.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 305. When properly modified, I\'m sure they can be impressive. But before sinking any big cash into one, consider this:

....... We\'ve rehashed this topic a bazillion times... and the way I see it, a 305 is gonna be a minimum of 50 HP short of a comparably equipped 350 no matter what you do.

..... That is, any mild hi-perf. engine worth it\'s salt is gonna make at least 1 (one) HP per cubic inch. So that\'s a deficeit of 50 seat-of-the-pants HP across the board for the 305.

if you can only manage to get 1 hp per c.i. then you did something wrong, in my opinion. youre absoloutely right though. however, if the man has a 305 now then what the hell, use it.

just run the 305 and meanwhile find a 350 and build yourself a good stout motor out of it and in a day or so swap it out and be done and you wont even lose any time of not being able to drive your truck

I like mine fine, but truthfully I wish I had a 350 instead. I\'ve got a 350 block, but I\'m currently too poor to do anything with it. I\'m hoping my income tax return will be good this year, and then maybe I can get er\' done. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Anything i\'ve purchased for my 305, i\'ve made sure can be used when I get the 350. ie. 600cfm holley, performer intake, headers, etc.

That\'s what I\'d do.

I guess I lucked out with mine... I ran the numbers on my block through \"mortec\" and all their chart said was that I had a 87-95 350 w/2 or 4 bolt main...... turned out when I tore it down it has the 4bolt mains.... lucky me

I agree with riotpoice and Scotty, when I said that(under Sweets10v8) about the 305s I was only comparing a stock 305 to a stock 4.3L just to help him understand why its not as dramatic as he may have thought.

like riotpolice said, cam it, performer intake. i have a 305 and do agree its no 350 but i am spinning my 12 1/2\" wide mickey thompson (no posi) till no end. besides, what rear end do you have, what tranny too, they make a difference too

that and a set of vortecs. i cant stress the heads anough. 305 heads are NOT performance pieces. the only time i would warrant using 305 heads is if i needed compression, even then, theyd be extensively reworked. but for the money youd spend reworking the stockers you could go buy yourself a nice set of aftermarket heads with a small chamber.

heads, cam and intake in that order. if you know what youre doing, youre looking at over 300 horsepower. if its out of a 305 who the hell cares. 300 horsepower is 300 horsepower. be it from a 305 or a 383. besides, when you spank the shit out of people with your truck its all the better to tell em what they got beat with. work with what you got...

Heads and cam are the way to hp with a 305 as with any sbc.The cheap way to 300 hp is the 305 heads with 1.84 intakes, pocketport them.Chose a cam with 216-218 duration @.050 and a lift of .454-.460. A Holley 600cfm or the smaller Q-JET. Look for heads off the higher perf. 305\'s.
