Hi all,

I have a 62 286 moto I am going to throw into my 87 4 banging s10. its Currently a manual tranny and I know I dont want ot use it behind a v8 so I am wondering.

Which way would you go? Automatic or manual?

Which auto works best, which manual works best?

P.S. By best I mean ease of install and general daily driving functionality.

Cheers!

a 700r4. easy install. and cheaper then a manual. all you need to do is get a crossmember and driveshaft from any auto short bed truck with a 2.8 v6 or 4.3 v6. remember only a 700r4 from a v8 or 4.3 v6 will work. the 2.8 700r4 has a to small bellhousing to fit a v8 but the other demensions are the same. plus the 700r4 with a small v8 like you have will give great take off and awsome fuel economy.

if you can\'t come accross a 700r4 then get a th-350 then you can use your tranny mount and driveline because that is the same swap I did.

But if you are looking for fuel mileage then like ZR1Blazer said do a 700r4.

Though not used by many a 200 4r has a better gear spread and od ratio than the 700 r4.It can be built for hp use .

thats what i use. but to find one that fits a chevy is hard. most of them have 11 holes in the bellhousing for the B.O.P for a chevy you will need a 12 hole bellhousing. not many people realize this. most 200-4r trannies were used in the GN, cutlass and so on. only the monte carlo ss came with a 200-4r but the first gear in the 700 is steeper then a 200. but the 200 in my opinion is the better trans.

Hey, great responses,, thanks alot to everyone, this is a great site...

So , if I go auto... will I have to close up the hole in the floor where the stick shift is coming through or can i get a console shifter for the auto to fit..??

you can patch the hole with shhet metal and silicone. then just get a console from a newer blazer with auot on the floor and use it. or get a B&M console mega shifter and use a 82-92 camaro console or a 85-88 monte carlo ss console. i used a console from an 87 Monte Carlo SS (http://s10v8.com/members/ZR1BLAZER/console2.JPG) and just trimed the driver side at the base and it bolted right up. and the mega shifter fit perfect.

I have to agree with the other responses.

Auto is a much simpler swap. Which ever tranny you can get your hands on is the one I\'d go with. All opions posted are good ones. Personally the t-350 I think would be the simplest. The t-350 w/out lock up is the simplest bolt in. No wires. The 200 and 700\'s will have to do some wiring on the lock-up. Not a bigg deal though.

Space.

Thanks for the responses, I have heard alotfo good things about the 700R4, how can you tell its a 700R4, what cars had em?

Nobody likes manual trannies? I had heard you could through a 5 speed from a 4.3 S10 behind an eight no probs?

If I did go auto, could I get a shifter that came outa the manul box hole in the floor. That way I dont have to buy new carpet... (cheep cheep)

This Site ROCKS!

Hey all thanks for the replies... SO Knanthrup,

Does the NV350 have a cable speedo? And is there any indentifaction markings on the tranny to identify it as an nv3500 (as I search the wrecking yards for one).

I wont be pushing too many horses with a 283 so I dont need a tank tranny, but I probably will slam a few gears given the oppurtunity http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Cheers and Thanks for reading my note.
