Have you tried shimming it? Also, I know this sounds funny but, I have actually filed material off of starters to get them to quiet up.

i have a CSI starter that does that. i shimmed the nose and it still rubs but not bad. i am going to pull it off and slide some washers in the nose and put it back. that should solve my problem. does the nose peice remove from your starter?

sounds like it\'s not shimmed right. try to see if you can look at the starter gear and the flexplate and see how much clearance is there. should be about .020\" clearance or so.

I ran into that same problem on a different 350 that I built 2 years ago.... the problem ended up being that the nose of the starter was too short and the teeth on the starter were not engaging enough of the flywheel. so, I went to autozone with the starter I already had and looked at about 20 different starters until I found one that was about 1/4\" longer.... problem fixed.... I the starter I ended up with was for a 72 chevy truck.
