View Full Version : how do i install a cluster with a tach?

my cluster that is in my truck originaly doesn\'t have a tach. how do i install a oem cluster with a tach? i can get a fairly new one for cheap, but i\'m not sure if my harness has all the correct wiring in it, or does it? it\'s a 98\' 2.2 5spd. if i need to add some wiring, that\'s ok, as long as it is possible to make the factory tach/ cluster work properly.

should be simple. but the tach is going to be intergrated into the plastic peice on the back of the dash. so i dont think just adding wires will do it. unless you soder them on the curcit.

im sure it could be done,but i think i would just add a external tach somewhere,or custom build the whole cluster(like i did on my 88).i have never built one on a 94+ truck,but i know a guy that runs a custom sign shop that can build a NICE one.

i want to stay with the factory cluster. i\'m just wanting to go from the cluster without the tach and install one with the tach.

If I remember right from back in the days when I played with a \'98 Sonoma with the 4.3, I was told that all the wiring was there for the tach, you just had to plug the new cluster in.

I think you\'ll just have to try it and see if it works! I think you\'ll probably be alright since you got the same year and engine. Let us know!

i just got my new cluster in a couple hours ago, and i just installed it in my truck and, IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!! it was just as simple as unbolting the original and pluging in the other and shazaam it works. you we\'re right jeff. thanks guys!!! one upgrade down, 45,876 to go-lol.
