I went to the junkyard today and looked at a bunch of vehicles...I didn\'t see any caprice classics, any full size truck had its engine and or tranny stripped...but I did manage to find the two things I was looking for. A (I believe) 700r4 and a 350.
The 350 is in a W. Virgina State Park sports van, the year of it was 1987. The casting numbers (I printed off the 10page list of them) matched up to be 10054727. It is a 2 or 4-bolt main, one seal main some made in Canada. It appeared to be in pretty good shape, it had the flywheel still on it, the valve covers, minus the fuel induction (carb) had the stock intake...its been covered in that van, so I would have to say it would be a good purchase...what do you think?
There were CRAP loads of 305\'s and a bunch of 80\'s cadillacs....whats the engines out of those? Will those work too? Anyway, I COULD NOT get it out...my co-worker that was going to go, couldn\'t. So hopefully next weekend I can get some help in pulling it out.

If the 350 and the 700R4 are there when you go back and you have teh funds.get them. If you are going to run a carb then you will have to get the lockup kit for the trans and put it in but that is easy from what I hear.

The 700R4 has a square pan, that is the best way to identify it. If you get a motor from a yard, just plan on the rebuild, but you will probably not need it.
The cadillacs went to front wheel drive in 86, so those are the predecessors of the northstar. they are not so reliable and they lack power. Most yards will cut out what you need for almost no extra charge, if you are not in a rush. I would ask and see if they will pull it by next weekend, so you and the buddy can just take it home and pull the heads off of it. Also record the VIN off of your donor and see if the radiator could be used.

hey riot, that would be the one.
I identified the 700r4 by using thisTransmission Identification & Decoding (http://www.nastyz28.com/transid.html)
I was planning on next week. My girlfriend is getting it for me. Also when and (if) I get it, it will be going straight over to poteats to see if its a good one or not. If not, right back where you came.It would be better if I could start it and hear it run so I wouldn\'t be getting a lemon, but thats what poteats\' is for.

careful on that. not all caddy\'s went to rwd in the 80\'s. the fleetwoods stayed RWD till the early 90\'s.

pop a look under the hood. my 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is a 5.7l RWD car. basicly the same thing your looking for.
